Why Every Couple Should Play More Board Games
Two years ago, on a beautiful spring night, the guy I was newly dating looked at me and said, “Let’s play a game on the deck.”
The game was UpWords. The guy was John. And he absolutely crushed me.
But somewhere between the tile stacking, the dramatic reactions, and the relentless trash talk, I saw a playfulness in him I instantly loved. What started as one simple game night turned into something that is now deeply woven into our relationship. After two years of regularly playing games together, I’m convinced more couples need this in their lives.
Board games may seem small, but they’ve become one of the easiest, most joyful ways we connect. All links are affiliate links.
Couples Board Games Bring Out Playfulness
One of my favorite things about couples board games is how quickly they strip away stress and seriousness. There are no agendas. No pressure. Just laughter, competition, inside jokes, and moments that become stories you reference for months afterward.
Playfulness matters in relationships. It keeps things light and connected. Some of our hardest laughing moments have happened sitting across from each other at the dining room table with a deck of cards between us.
A Little Competition Is Good for a Relationship
Nothing spices up an ordinary Tuesday night quite like saying, “I’m definitely going to beat you.”
A little healthy competition adds energy to a relationship. It gives you something to engage in together that isn’t centered around logistics, schedules, or responsibilities. Instead of talking about bills or calendars, you’re battling over strategy, bluffing your way through a card game, or dramatically celebrating a lucky move.
Honestly? It’s fun to care about something low stakes together.
Learning New Games Together Creates Connection
One of the unexpected benefits of couples board games is the experience of learning together. Opening a new game and figuring out the rules side by side feels like a tiny shared adventure.
There’s always that moment where we both look at each other confused and ask, “Wait… what does this card do again?”
And then eventually, together, we figure it out.
Those moments build teamwork in such a simple but meaningful way.
Board Games Strengthen Family Relationships Too
What started as something John and I loved doing together quickly became something we started doing with the kids too.
Some of our best family memories happen around the table during game nights. Games are one of the rare activities that work equally well for date night at home and rainy Saturdays with the entire family.
I love activities that create connection across ages, and games do that beautifully.
Couples Board Games Are an Antidote to Screen Time
One of the biggest reasons I recommend couples board games is because they naturally pull you away from screens.
It’s so easy to spend evenings sitting beside each other while both scrolling phones or half-watching television. Games interrupt that pattern. They require interaction, eye contact, conversation, and attention.
You stop being people simply existing in the same room and become people actively spending time together.
That shift matters.
Game Nights Build Community Too
This year, we started inviting other couples over for game nights, and it has quickly become one of our favorite ways to build friendships.
The laughter gets louder. The competition gets funnier. And somehow, you walk away knowing people more deeply than before.
Games create shared experiences, and shared experiences create connection.
Couples Board Games Make an Affordable Date Night
Date nights add up quickly, which is another reason I love games so much.
Most of our favorite games cost less than dinner out or two movie tickets, and unlike one night out, they become something you can enjoy again and again. John laughs every time I come home with another game, but honestly, it’s one of the best entertainment investments we make.
One of my favorite gifts I’ve ever given him was last Christmas when I wrapped up 12 games for him—one to open each month of the year. Every single one was either a two-player game or worked wonderfully with two people.
It became the gift that kept giving all year long.
