Bring the Rebel
As I mentioned in my last post, I have been swamped at work. While this is a blessing, it was also a challenge this week because my VW bug Lucy decided to need a new alternator and was in the shop for two days. Thankfully, Angie and Todd let us borrow one of their cars on Friday so I could direct a video shoot for a client and Matthew could take Elias to the doctor for his six-month shots and check-up. Type A, controlling woman that I am, I wasn’t thrilled not to go to the appointment, but I left a list of questions for Matthew to ask the pediatrician and went to work.
Well, Matthew called me after the appointment and said very directly, Dr. S found a lump in Elias’ abdomen. While she is confident that it is probably nothing more than poop (E has a lot of poop problems), she would like us to get an ultrasound of his abdomen today. WHAT?!?! Of course this is the appointment that I miss, right? Like any mother, my mind starts racing, but I did my best to get calm, as the doctor repeatedly said she was just being extra cautious.
Because of my video shoot, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to go to the test at Vanderbilt with Matthew. When I realized that the shoot was going to end earlier than anticipated, I called Matthew. Our conversation went something like this:
“Baby, can you bring the rebel (my camera) to the hospital? This is a big deal and I want it to be today’s 365 picture.”
“No, baby, I am not bringing the camera to this appointment. This could be serious. I don’t want you sitting there with your camera around your neck.”
“Well, I just think we should document it. I know other scrapbookers would have their cameras with them and take pictures. Plus, you said Dr. S said it was probably nothing.”
“I don’t care.”
“Fine. I’ll see you at 4:00 and I won’t take pictures. Though I wish I could find my little camera so it would already be in my purse and then you would probably not mind as much.”
“Oh Jessica…”
At 4:00 Matthew picked me up from work and sitting on the passenger seat was the camera. 🙂
After a lot of ultrasound pictures, the doctor determined everything was just fine with Elias. It was just poop.
Once we heard that everything was fine, Matthew got out the camera and handed it to me to take a few shots of the peanut on the bed.
Thank God it was just poop. Now if it would just come out on a regular basis… but that is another post.

my husband thought i was crazy for taking my camera to the hospital through all of our beginning surgeries with cole, but i did it anyway. I’m glad your pictures were all about nothing but some poop!! 🙂
You had me laughing in this post 🙂 I’m glad it was just poop. There are just way too many sad things happening with babies in the blog world these days. I love seeing all of the joy and happiness y’all have with your little boy. Inspires me.
Also – read your post about your husband’s baptism. That is really amazing. I have been wanting to be baptized for a long time now, but I want it to be incredibly meaningful and done by someone I trust and that knows me. I think I will just have to wait a little while longer until I find a church home and get comfortable. Anyway – just wanted to say thanks for the laugh! Hope you have a great week.
HaHaHa! We had a very similar discussion in August when Morgan had tubes put in her ears. Of course it wasn’t for Project 365, but I was already pretty anal about documenting everything with pictures!
Oh and glad it was just poop!
Have you tried infant probiotics? It has been a life saver for my 3 month old. He used to go every 4 days and now he goes at least 2 times a day! I got mine from http://www.vitacost.com and my doctor said that they are completely safe for him. I know it can be frustrating so I thought I’d share! 🙂 Love your blog…I found it through bring the rain. That’s wonderful about your husband’s baptism today. I would love to get baptized as an adult. -Melissa
THis has me laughing…too funny. he does look cute on that table and I am sure it will be an adorable page in THE scrapbook!
Hahaha! I’m laughing at this, and so glad it was nothing major 🙂 🙂
you are such a scrapbooker!!! i am glad all is fine…
So glad that Elias is ok AND that you got pictures!
I’m so glad that Matthew had the good sense to remember that you are always right and brought your camera 🙂
Poor little stinker… wish you had lots of dirty diapers to change…
Jess, you make me laugh but it is incredibly sweet at the same time 🙂 xxx.
Oh this made me smile! You can now say that Elias has had his most expensive photo shoot yet! My daughter had a MRI of her brain a few years ago, she had it framed and it hung on her bedroom wall for awhile! When we got the bill and saw how much it cost, it became “investment” artwork! Thank goodness for the poop! This happens A LOT with kids! Can’t tell you how many panic ridden phone calls we get at the office for “emergency constipation” When it’s happening to your child though, it’s no laughing matter. This is a case where it’s ok if “poop happens!”
I’m so glad he’s okay – I loved this post because I do the SAME THING ALL THE TIME!! My husband is routinely embarrassed by the inappropriate times I want to take pictures for my scrapbook (and now, for my Project 365!) Too cute.
So glad that E was just fine!
What is project 365?
I’m impressed that you thought of the camera. I would have been such a basket case I would have forgotten! And YAY for the Rebel! I got one for Chrismtas and LOVE LOVE LOVE it! It’s my first DSLR and I’m still trying to figure out how to use it…
that will be me when im a mom..taking the camera to the doctors office 🙂 i hope im as diligent as you in the documenting of my children’s lives! (I laughed relaly hard too)
I’m glad everything came out all right! I totally hear you about bringing the camera!
Now let’s hope everything else comes out all right (of Elias I mean! 😉 )
OMG what a chunkie monkey! I love that pic, txs God he brough the camera 🙂
I know the terror of the x-ray. My son had a few at Vanderbilt for his acid reflux (the doctor matter-of-factly said she wanted to see of any “shadows” showed up on the film- What a lovely bedside manner). What was worse than having the x-rays done was sitting in the waiting room with so many children who were really, REALLY sick and their parents. It broke my heart.
Glad everything turned out okay.
yay for it only being poop. have you ever used miralax? our daughter has a minor imperforate anus and needs to be on it to keep her stool softer when she does go. it helps keep it soft and helps her to be regular as well…
Thank God it was just poop!(and there is not meant to be any irreverance in that–it is a prayer of thanksgiving) amazing blessings. ummm gotta admit when our daughter had her appendix removed via emergency surgery the only thing that kept me sane was that i could take a couple of pictures of her—and that is just not that serious!
