In Our Neck of the Woods
Here are the things going on in our neck of the woods.
- Our new carpet was installed yesterday. It was A LOT of work to get ready for because our condo is on a second story, so we didn’t really have anywhere to go with our stuff. Matthew’s bathroom was packed floor to ceiling with all of our books, nicknacks, lamps, blankets, Elias’s toys, etc. and the installers moved the furniture from room to room. The carpet looks amazing – it totally transformed our home. I am so glad to be rid of the nasty berber carpet that we did have. Now we have to put everything back… and hopefully have a bit less clutter! Isn’t it pretty? We got it through Home Depot.
- Matthew’s parents, sister Lis, her husband Dave and their three kids come to town this weekend for a family friend’s wedding and Elias’s first birthday party! They will get here Thursday and are leaving Wednesday. We haven’t seen them since Christmas and are really looking forward to the visit.
- Speaking of the birthday party, I am feeling good about it and not stressing nearly as much as I thought I would be. It is going to be super low-key, but still memorable. It has been in the high 90s all week, so hopefully it will cool off a little this weekend – and not rain, since it is at a park. I will cry if it rains.
- Elias is officially crawling on both knees and is getting faster by the day! He is also saying mamamamamama all the time. It melts my heart, even though he says it to everything and everyone. He does know though that I am mama, which is really sweet. We are trying to teach him to raise his arms in the air when we say “how big are you?” and to blow kisses. He mostly just laughs at us.
- I am majorly behind on my project 365. I have been taking photos every day but haven’t journaled in almost 2 months.
- My Big Picture Class is probably going to launch in mid-late August. I am working on edits now and plan to submit the final class after the long fourth of July weekend. Please be praying that I am able to get everything done.
- We finally decided on a carseat… I will be writing about it soon. However, we need to buy a second one for my VW beetle. Any recommendations on good toddler carseats for small cars? Elias will hardly ever ride in this, but for the times that we have to transport him in the bug, we need a seat for it, as we don’t want to have to move the other seat back and forth, plus I don’t think it will fit well. Please help!
What is going on in your world?

You are certainly busy! I will be praying that there is unshine for Elias's big day 🙂 xxx.
So fun Elias is crawling so much and so fast! That is such a fun stage!
We have a Graco convertible carseat that we really like. You have a Britax right now, right? So the Graco is a bit smaller than the Britax.
@sweetchocswirls
I actually went with the First Years True Fit car seat. It was a GREAT decision. So happy with it. I will check out Graco.
The carpet looks great! I love when a change like that makes you feel great about where you are living all over again. No suggestions on the car seat I guess. We have the Cosco Serena which is a great carseat but I don't think it's small enough to fit in a little car. I'll be interested to see what you find out.
Just wanted to give everyone with babies a heads up that the AAP is now recommending children ride rear facing until 2 years old (instead of 1)! Good luck with your carseat search! Here is the AAP link: http://aapnews.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/30/4/12-a
I highly highly highly recommend the sunshine kids radian car seat. GREAT reviews and excellent safety ratings. As well as very small and compact.
they aren't cheap… but they're worth it.

Yes, we want to keep Elias rear facing until he is two!
Don't feel bad about not keeping up with your journaling for 2 months…I am trying to STILL finish my daughter's 1st year book (she is 19 months old), and keep up with my "belly book" for this new baby on the way…and I'm way behind as well! You'll get caught up one of these days 🙂
As for the carseats, we have Graco car seats and love them. 🙂
Jessica,
I got the Maxi cosi Priori carseat. It is the only convertible seat that actually reclines when forward facing. it is already tilted back in the reverse-facing position which is nice during long rides for naps. I compared it against the Britax roundabout since my car would only fit these two seats – not the marathon and definitely not the boulevard. I also spoke with a car seat expert (from a baby store boutique) and he said that both were comparable in safety and quality, but the Priori is cheaper than the Britax. Maxi Cosi is european (I think from Holland) where the safety standards are higher for car seats.

good luck – and thanks for such a great blog. Your kid is a hoot!
Love the carpet!!!!! I will pray for beautiful weather for Elias' party xo to mom and dad turner…love you guys Mom
I have an Eddie Bauer 3-in-1 seat. It's been great from infancy to toddler so far. It'll be my son's booster next. It fit in my hubby's Mini Cooper fine.
Rear facing until 2? My son's legs were cramped up from 9 months on when he was rear facing. I was so relieved when I got to turn him around at 12 months. He could finally stretch out his poor legs. But I have a tall boy. He just turned 2 in March and people mistake him for a 4 year old all the time.
