One Day Closer
As I mentioned earlier this week, Elias and I are headed to Wisconsin for some time with my family. Matthew is going to stay in Nashville so he can work on some writing projects.
Elias hasn’t flown since Christmas and his excitement to go on an airplane is off the charts.
When I told him we were going see Nana and Papa on an airplane in two weeks, he cried because he wanted to go on the airplane right then.
To help manage his expectations, I made a paper chain to hang on his door. I just used some left over scrapbook paper and had it put together in about five minutes.
Each day when he wakes up, we go over to chain, he rips off a paper and yells “one day closer!” Today we shouted “HOORAY! Today we get to go on the airplane!” (well, if you are reading this before 7:30 am, that’s what we’ll shout when he wakes up…)
My mom used to help my sister and I make paper chains for lots of things – Daddy coming home from trips, holidays, vacations, etc.
It has been fun to now do this with my son.
As a mom, do you do things with your kids that you did as a child?
What a wonderful idea! I’m going to do this to count down for vacation!! 🙂
This is a great idea! I will definitely be using this when our kiddos come! Love it!! 🙂
Jess my mom made us chains for all occasions and I loved it. So one year when my son was small and could hardly wait for Christmas to arrive, I made him a chain with candys wrapped and twisted in celophane and tied in ribbons. It was so pretty!
I explained to him that when all the candies were gone….it would be Christmas. We proudly hung the chain on the wall and I got busy doing some chores. About 10 minutes later my son came to fine me and announced “Yea….it’s time for Christmas!” I looked down to see a messy little face smeared with chocolate and realized I should have said “we will eat one candy each night…then it will be Christmas….instead of when the candies are gone!”
I still chuckle about this memory and that little guy is now 18 years old:)
I’m totally stealing this idea to do while my husband is in China. That way, we can count down the days until my boys go to Grandma’s house!! Yup, they don’t really care when Daddy gets back, but Isaiah is already frantic with excitement over going to Grandma’s!
What a great idea! It’s so hard for kids to get the concept of time, especially when they are waiting for something that is days away. My husband will be traveling a lot in the future for his job, maybe this is something I can do to help the kids know when Daddy will be coming back each time.
is it just me, or does elias look like he’s five years old in this photo? he’s getting so big!!!
