No-Sew Owl Costume Tutorial

Last year, Adeline was the sweetest pink owl. With Halloween just around the corner, I wanted to share how to make this darling, easy, no-sew owl costume! This owl costume could easily be modified to be any bird with any color. Originally I intended to sew the feathers on, but a sewing machine malfunction caused me to go to plan B, which should have been my plan A because it was so quick and easy.

Supplies for No-Sew Owl Costume

• Long sleeve onesie (Mine was pink. thredUP is a great place to get an inexpensive onesie to upcycle – especially since new members get a free $10 credit to the site)
• 1/4 yard of three different colors of fabric (I used light pink, pink and hot pink)
• a small bag of white feathers
• one pink sheet of felt
• one brown sheet of felt
• one white sheet of felt
• jewels for eyes (I found mine in the scrapbooking aisle)
• 12-18” of elastic
• hot glue
• one pack of stitch witchery

Steps for Owl Costume Body

1. Cut fabric into enough feathers to cover the front of the onesie and the sleeves.
2. Cut strips of stitch witchery, which you will use to adhere the feathers to the onesie.
3. Starting at the bottom of the onesie, line up the feathers, alternating the colors to your liking. Once you have determined the pattern, put a strip of stitch witchery down (under the top of the feathers), and iron the feathers down. By putting the stitch witchery just at the top, the feathers will be free to move.
4. After you have covered the front of the onesie, make your wings. I used a rectangular piece of fabric, which was the same length as the sleeve. I ironed my fabric feathers just to the bottom, then used stitch witchery to adhere the rectangle to the back of the sleeve. The feathers hung off the bottom, making it look like little feathered wings.
5. Then take your white feathers and tuck small ones throughout the pink feathers. Use a small dot of hot glue to attach the feathers.

 Steps for Owl Headpiece

1. For the owl headpiece, cut your pink felt in half the short way so you have two rectangles. Then cut the two pieces into two heads. You are going to use one for the owl face and the second as backing for the elastic/white feathers.
2. Cut two large white circles, two medium brown circles and two small pink circles. Also cut a brown triangle for the beak.
3. Trim the pink circles to look like eyelids.
4. Measure how much elastic you will need for your child’s head and trim appropriately.
5. Glue the white circle to the mask and the brown circle to the white circle. (use a fine amount of glue for all steps for the mask. If you use too much glue, it will leak through the felt.)
6. Adhere the jewels to brown circles, then take the pink eyelids and glue them over the jewels. You may need to pinch the eyelid slightly to get it to adhere flat.
7. Glue the beak to the bottom center of the mask.
8. Take the second owl headpiece and glue the elastic to it. You will want the ends of the elastic glue to the felt. (Then when you attach the face you won’t be able to see the ends.)
9. Glue white feathers to the top of the back piece.
10. Glue the back to the front, sealing the feathers and elastic inside the mask
11. Optional: If you have extra jewels, glue earrings to the owl’s ears.

This owl costume didn’t take long too make. You just have to be a little patient cutting and adhering all the feathers, but it is totally worth it. 🙂
