Birchbox vs. Ipsy: April 2013 Packages

Have you heard of beauty boxes?
I hadn’t. At least, not until very recently.
My friend Kristen (Lainey’s mom) introducing me to the concept of these are monthly subscription services where you get a bunch of beauty samples in the mail. She subscribes to Birchbox and said I would love it.
I did a little research and found out about Ipsy, a service very similar to Birchbox. The reviews of both services were good and I was torn over which one to subscribe to. Many of you even were divided on Facebook about which service you like better.
Both are $9.99 a month, so I decided to try both for a few months and see which I liked better. This was the first month I received both kits, which I was so excited about. I’m not really a beauty person – I tend to just stick the basics found at Target or Walgreens, so I love the opportunity to try some fun products that I would probably never buy – or even be exposed to. I don’t think I know a woman who wouldn’t LOVE these services.
I filmed a video right after opening my April Birchbox and Ipsy glam bag. You’ll literally see my reactions to the products, a bit of my chaotic family life and my vote for which box was better this month. 🙂
Boxes are typically not filled with the same things across the board, so I always enjoy seeing what others get in their boxes. (Here’s my friend Vera’s Birchbox this month). To watch more videos, just YouTube Ipsy or Birchbox plus the month for other videos.)
Do you subscribe to either of these services or have you in the past? If you have subscribed to both, which do you like better?
I used to sign up to one of these boxes here in the UK. I really liked it for the first couple of months but then found I was barely using any of the stuff and it started piling up! Particularly, the creams and nail polishes! They are fun though!
LOL…..LOL watched it 5 times to see the beginning with the kids….laughed and laughed
I knew you would love that part. 🙂 REAL life. That’s what I’m about. 🙂 xo
I’ve been a little underwhelmed by Birchbox the past two months. I don’t do much beauty stuff (aside from Target, etc.) so for me its a chance to try new stuff. I’m giving them one more chance and then may try Ipsy. Thanks for the review.
Jessica, I loved your video! Such a great example of real life motherhood.
I am with Mary B. When I first received Birchbox I was really excited about the samples because I don’t usually spend much on beauty products. But in the last couple of months I too have been underwhelmed with the samples, sizes and what I have gotten. I don’t know know if my profile seems like I am old but I mostly get anti-aging stuff. This month I was interested in the magazine subscription (and that you could get a $9.99 rebate if you didn’t want the magazine!)
From your video, I would have thought Ipsy would have won because of the variety of items and sizes of the samples- it just looked like it was worth more. I got birchbox as a gift, but after it runs out I may try out Ipsy. Thanks for sharing.
Your hair looks so cute!!
I haven’t tried anything. I really want to but I can’t afford 10 dollars….okay maybe I could save my change and see what I get. I just use any beauty products so it would kinda a waste.
I have been an ipsy subscriber for a few months now. It’s fun getting a goodie bag every month but I haven’t received anything that makes me want to go out and buy more of it.
