A New Way for Moms to Shop: Stitch Fix
Do any of these statements describe you?
- You are busy and find it challenging to find time to shop for yourself;
- You feel like your body type makes it difficult to find clothes; and/or
- You don’t like to spend a lot of money on clothes, but consequently, your clothes wear out faster.
If you answered yes to any of those questions – I answered yes to ALL of them – then you are going to love this newish service I just started using called Stitch Fix. (This post is NOT sponsored, though I do include my affiliate link.)
Here’s how Stitch Fix describes itself: “Stitch Fix is a personal styling service. You tell us your style, size, and budget preferences, and we send you a package of stylish goodies to try on at home. Each Fix™ is unique and hand-picked just for you.”
A personal stylist? Mail order clothes? When I first read these things, I thought, sounds nice but seems too much for my budget. Anyone nodding their head in agreement?
But as the months have gone on and I have read and heard more and more personal testimonials about this service, I decided to finally to fill out a style profile and try it.
And y’all, after two fixes I’m hooked.
But, it didn’t start out that way. When I opened my first fix, I thought I would love everything. I had been super specific in my style profile, emphasizing that I wanted tops to accommodate my large bust. I also said that I had a classic style and loved jewel tones. Here are 4 of the 5 things that were included.
Not awful, but here were my issues. The burgundy top just made my chest area look bigger, which is not what I was going for. The dress didn’t zip up the back because it was so tight around my bust. The green cardigan was a beautiful color, but again, was too tight. Moreover, both the burgundy top and the cardigan were not the high quality I expected for the price point ($38 each). I also received a flowy blue skirt that overwhelmed my frame (not pictured).
I did keep the cream top. It was a fabric I don’t have much of and I liked the unique neck. Perfect for work.
Because the first fix wasn’t a home run, I considered not trying Stitch Fix again. But multiple friends urged me to leave detailed feedback about my fix and give it another shot. So I left detailed feedback, scheduled my next fix and said a little prayer.
Two weeks ago I received my second fix from a new stylist named Jackie, and she hit it out of the park. I’m so glad I tried again. I loved almost everything in my box, which included 3 tops, a cardigan and a dress.
Let’s start with the only thing I didn’t love – this grey top.
It didn’t work for me for a couple reasons – I didn’t like the loose weave (I knew I would snag it), and I find that scoop necks usually just accentuate my bust in an unflattering way. It also just wasn’t a flattering shape.
But, that’s okay that I didn’t love the grey top, because everything else rocked. I kept the two other tops in the box, as well as the cardigan.
The Henley is the perfect fall casual shirt. I paired it with a fun statement necklace from Zulily and skinny jeans for the pumpkin farm the day after receiving it. It was super comfortable and not too heavy.
I have coveted that tulip shirt for many months after seeing it on several other friends and was so excited it was included in my fix. I love the soft material and versatile style. Last week, while at a conference for work, I belted the top with a a nice pair of slacks and heels.
And the black and white cardigan – be still my heart. I love it so much. The stretchy, quality fabric. The classic style. The length. A perfect 10. I wore it when Matthew and I went out for our anniversary and wore it again to one of the conferences I attended last week.
I also received a cute dress, but it was way too tight (hence why there’s no photo – that wasn’t getting out on the internet!). Had it fit, I would have likely kept it.
Fix #2 for the win! 🙂
I hope this post encourages you to try Stitch Fix. You do have to pay a $20 styling fee for your box from Stitch Fix, but if you keep anything you receive, that $20 gets applied to the cost of what you keep. You also don’t pay for the shipping either way. And if you keep everything in your box, you get 25% off. I have a feeling though, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Plus, with the holidays around the corner, it’s always nice to have something new to wear!
I LOVE that tulip top too. I filled out a style profile on stitch fix a while ago but haven’t actually ordered my “fix” yet. Glad to see you had a good experience and glad to know to be very specific in my profile. I may go back and edit before I proceed now.
Okay, I LOVE the tulip top and the henley and the cardigan! Funnily enough, I really liked that burgundy top on you! Your pics look great 🙂
I agree–love the henley, tulip top, and cardigan. You glow! I also loved the burgundy top on you, too!
I am so hesitant to try this because it just seems so darn expensive! I am a bargain shopper even when it comes to my clothes and I hate paying full price for anything!
It was expensive when I had my fix… I was expecting to see a bit higher in price range but it was a plain Jane dress for $80 all tops were $48 and up. They seem to have more designers now so prices may be different. I would try again though! But I am with you I am a bargain shopper! If you were looking for a special occasion this would be perfect!
Brooke – the tops in my fix started at $38. Also, I’m with you. I wanted items that would be unique and run of the mill, plain jane. The burgandy top was one of those for me. I felt like I could buy a similar one at Target, you know?
I am the EXACT same way. I literally was on the fence for nearly a year because I am so cheap when it comes to clothes. But after seeing the clothes on so many friends, I know that they are not cheaply made Old Navy clothes. These are nice items for my wardrobe that will last for a long time.
Also, I have to factor my time. Spending a half day shopping for some nice items for my wardrobe is not a luxury that I have, so paying a little more than I normally would gives me more time, which is worth it.
Plus, they have a great referral program, so if you like it, you can refer other friends and earn some credits.
Jodi, I feel the same! I recommend trying CoutureSqd. It’s a rental subscription where a stylist sends you 4 clothes (tops/dresses) for $35 and you can wear them for a month, then buy what you like. It’s works for me because I’m definitely not paying full price (or even quarter price…) for anything and still get to wear them. Clothes are pretty good too. They have some pics on their facebook page if you’re curious.
Thanks for sharing! I’m not sure I would want to pay $35 a month when I don’t get to keep anything, but that’s just me. Different strokes for different folks!
The tulip top paired with the belt looks sharp! And I love that cardigan. I have used Stitch Fix once–like you, I have frame that can be difficult to fit properly (I am 4’11–so convenient when most petite sizes are for 5’4 and under!) and I tend to have Ann Taylor tastes on an Old Navy budget. That being said, I got two dresses out of my fix that I have worn all summer, and one of them transitions nicely into fall as well. Definitely worth the money!
This looks adorable! And I must say its nice to see someone with an “atypical” body type (larger bust like you said) who looks fantastic. A lot of their models are 5″7 and a size 0 and its nice to see they can style real moms! You look adorable. My 12th fix comes today!
I have coveted that tulip top ever since I first saw it hit the blogosphere. It looks phenomenal on you!!! And that open front cardigan??!! Talk about perfect for you. That sweater would look TERRIBLE on me, but you rock it hardcore. I’m so glad you are enjoying your Stitch Fix experience!!
Jessica – I am so glad you wrote a post about this! I went straight to the site and scheduled my first fix. I was a little disappointed in that the earliest I could schedule it was for November 26. I am hoping this is great, because like you, there is not much time to shop with two kids. I am so hoping my stylist sends me some great pieces! Thanks again!
Yes, it does take a few weeks (my sister couldn’t schedule her first one until early December), but that is because they assign you a stylist, pick specific clothes for you, etc. You also have to figure they have to order clothes for all their customers! It will be worth the wait. Enjoy!
This is an atypical problem to have with Stitchfix. It’s the longest I’ve seen them booked out. I think it’s the holidays and the transition to fall clothes!
Jessica, such a great idea! I just signed up and put in an order. You are so right that if you don’t have time to shop, the higher price just might make up for the time you’d spend shopping. And you can only throw away so many pilled old navy sweaters before you realize that maybe paying a little more is worth it! If only we all had time to shop for great deals on great clothes– just a hobby I can’t work into my life schedule right now, either!
I so love those tops you kept AND that cardigan. the cardigan has to be my favorite thing you got in that box! if fits and flatters you SO WELL!!!
Thank you SO much.
Love that cardi! Stitch Fix rocks. 🙂
Thank you so much!
I’m like you, I was so skeptical at first. Did my first and it was okay. Second was so much better and I’m waiting on my 3rd (11/18) and I hear so many people say the 3rd is the best!!!
I’m waiting on my third as well – yay!
