Throwback Thursday Stories: The Time I Wouldn’t Let Go of Paul Newman
When I was growing up, my family went to one Indy Car race a year. You see, my parents worked for Target and Target was a big sponsor of one of the cars, so we always got tickets.
My sister and I LOVED getting autographs of all the drivers and any other celebrities we could find. It was the thrill of the hunt.
Well, one year, we heard Paul Newman was at the race. My sister Melissa and I kept going by where he was supposedly hanging out and finally, we happened on him just as he was headed to the pit area. We were about 14 & 16 and were SO excited, I think mostly because my Nana loved him and knew she would be so tickled.
We asked if he would take a photo with us and he said yes, but it seemed like he was just saying yes because we were kids, but really wanted to be on his way.
I sensed that we only had a couple seconds, so when I got next to him, I wrapped my arm around his back and held his shirt!! I don’t know if I thought he was going to run away from me or what, but it seemed like a good plan.
I LOVE the picture my sister snapped because Paul has this little grin on his face like these two sisters are something.
I have so many happy memories from those summers at the races, but that is one of my favorites.
I can’t wait to read your Throwback Thursday Stories below. And if you share them on Twitter or Instagram, don’t forget to use the hashtag #TBTstories!
What a fun story! I love that part of the reason you were doing it was to make your Nana happy. : )
Oh my, he is so handsome! I’ve never been to a car race and I bet the Indy series would be really cool, especially with all of the celebrities.
So cool! I’m just disappointed that he was wearing shades that cover up those baby blues. 🙂 Thanks for the linkup!
🙂
Hi, that’s a terrific photo! A photo with Paul at the track was extraordinarily rare. He never signed, and rarely did them. He would stop and talk to you for an hour though. Which track was this from?
