Making Time to Read: 3 Book Recommendations
Yesterday in my post on taking things a day at a time, I mentioned how I have been still taking time to read. It has been CRITICAL to carve out fringe hours to make time for myself in these busy weeks.
In the past month I have devoured three books – partly because of their great writing and partly because I have been hungry for words. I thought I would pass the titles along, in case you are looking for a few books to read in the coming months (affiliate links used in this post).
Gone Girl: I have had this on my bookshelf for more than a year. Once I started it, I could not put it down. It is an excellent book with lots of plot twists and fantastic character development. No I have not seen the movie yet, but I want to.
Dark Places: After finishing Gone Girl, I wanted to read more by the same author. Multiple friends recommended that Dark Places was the next best book to read and I devoured it just as fast. I found it to be darker than Gone Girl, and while the end was satisfying, it wasn’t the complete shock of the plot twist in Gone Girl. I definitely still recommend it though.
Rare Bird: A Memoir of Loss and Love: I pre-ordered this book after reading the author Anna’s post on HuffPost Parents. Anna’s 12-year-old son was killed in a freak flood accident and Rare Bird is the story of losing him and moving forward. Her writing is profound. I started it while on my flight to Orlando this week and literally had tears rolling down my face as I read it on the shuttle bus to the hotel. I could not put it down and finished it in just a few days. Rare Bird is a book every mother should read. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
I hope that if you are in a busy place, you are taking time to care for yourself as well. It is so important.
What good books have you read lately?
Making time to read is important, for you and your kiddos! What a great way to foster the love of reading to your children. I’m currently reading Hands Free Mama and am loving it so far. Thanks for all your suggestions!
Jessica, thanks for the book suggestions. I always love hearing what others are reading! I read Orphan Train on your suggestion and loved it!
Thanks again!
I wanted to see gone girl too until I read the parental warning on IBMD. WOW! No thanks. I hope the book wasn’t that bad.
Wow, 3 books in one month? I’m lucky to finish one every couple months. Most moms don’t travel solo as much as you do, so it’s a lot more difficult to make time for ourselves.
I read Gone Girl a few months ago and saw the movie last week. Both were very good. The movie follows the book quite accurately, which is very rare. Thanks for the recommendation for Dark Places and Rare Bird. I will pick them up after I finish my current read “Outlander.”
I am a few chapters into Gone Girl, and its taunting me when I am am attempting to do other things. I find myself making excuses to give me more time to read. I have always loved to read, but for years didn’t make time for it. In the last couple of years I have picked up books (Or opened my Kindle app) much more often and I am the better for it! Thanks for the recommendations! Two more books to add to my list!
