Dear Ezra, Today I Go Back to Work
Today I go back to work. We’ve been inseparable for 16 weeks. You’ve been by my side and snuggled on my chest for hours every day.
And I’ve worked a lot while we’ve been together. Remember how we released Mommy’s first book? You were there for every podcast I recorded, every guest post I wrote, every picture I took. You got a passport, traveled on planes, nursed in green rooms and never complained.
But my work days are going to look different now. I’ll be at an office, not on our red couch. I’m going to miss you, buddy. A lot.
You see, Mommy has to work. It helps us to pay for our home, have food on the table, go to great doctors and do fun things as a family. But more importantly, I have to work because it is what God has called me to do. He has gifted me with unique talents for the work that I do, and it brings me joy to steward those gifts well.
God has also gifted you, sweet boy.
As you get older, I can’t wait to see you use those gifts.
Your name means Helper and already, I can see in your eyes that you will have a tenderness toward people. I know God is going to use you in a might way.
So today, you’ll be home with Daddy and have milk from a bottle. You both will be fine. But I’ll be thinking about you – and texting Daddy to check in – all day. I can’t wait to get home, see your big smile and hold you close in my arms. Until then, I’ll have you close in my heart.
Love,
Mommy
Sending you hugs and prayers! You will be AWESOME and so will he. Have a wonderful day, Jessica!
This is the best. I love the way you show your kids the importance of work and calling. They are blessed to have you as their mama. And what a special time to look back on — all those weeks with your baby boy as your work buddy during a most special book launch. Sweet, sweet memories. You inspire me, Jessica! Praying for your day.
The return to work after maternity leave is so hard…I’ve done it twice and the second time was just as hard as the first. You are a strong woman and you will be okay, and so will Ezra and daddy. Your view on be a working mother really resonates with me – your reasons are mine as well. Sending thoughts and strength your way!
aw, that made me tear up! The third time was the hardest for me I think! Love how you are already thinking of his gifts. Thinking of you all today!
Love this – it’s just a new chapter, and the “lasts” are harder than the “firsts.” Hope you get to enjoy an adult lunch with friends, that always made my return to work easier!
Love this-I hope this makes it into his scrapbook! Have a great first day back & a joyful reunion when you return this evening!
Oh how I loved this letter to Ezra! I love how one of your reasons for returning to work is God’s calling and using the gifts God gave you. When I made the decision to return to work after being a stay-at-home mom for 7 years, I unfortunately heard lots of negative opinions and remarks from some who felt there was no reason for me to return to work. So while I know this letter is intended for your sweet Ezra, thank you for the fresh perspective and helping me validate my decision to return to work. I was not able to put it into words two years ago but I knew after I prayed and thought about it, my returning to work was the right thing to do.
