Minion Birthday Party Games
Coming up with activities that had to do with the Minions for Elias’s Minion Birthday Party was not an easy task. You see lots of ‘pin the eye on the Minion’ and ‘toss the eye in the Minion’ on Pinterest, but I needed more than that for a party with a bunch of hyper 7-year-old boys.
Elias had a field day at his school this spring and loved it. As I looked for outdoor games we could play, I realized a “Minion Field Day” for his Minion birthday party was perfect.
I painted signs for the relay games using images I found in a Minion coloring book. I simply blew up the images and traced them with carbon paper onto foam core. I then painted them with acrylic paints. I cut the letters out using my Silhouette and then put adhesive on the letter with my Xyron Creative Station.
The relay games were perfect for a group of boys and everyone had a lot of fun. Since it was a hot summer day, we made sure to include lots of water in the games. I hope this inspires you in your Minion birthday party planning.
One-Eyed Relay
This was a simple version of the popular egg on a spoon activity, only instead of an egg, I gave the kids ping pong balls that I drawn a black circle on to make look like eye balls. The kids were divided into two teams and raced.
Egyptian Water Pass
This was my favorite game – and Elias’s too. We had four large plastic bowls, two for each team. (I bought the bowls at The Dollar Store because I wanted them to all be the same size and very lightweight)
Like the Minion who had the water container on his head, the kids had to dump water from one bowl to another. The catch was that the bowls had to be on top of their heads.
Be sure to have a parent there with a pitcher of water because the kids will spill a lot of water. They giggled and giggled and giggled. It was awesome.
Minion Mummy
This game was inspired by the first Minion movie, Despicable Me, when the minion plays with the toilet paper. For this game, we divided the kids into three teams and they had to race to mummify one member of their team using toilet paper. They were not very good at wrapping the toilet paper and it kept ripping, but they still had fun.
Caveman Hop
Potato sack races are always fun, and the burlap potato sacks reminded me of caveman fur, so I called the relay the Caveman Hop.
The boys loved taking turns hopping in the sacks.
Shrink Gun Race
This was the boys’ favorite, probably because they got squirt guns! To set up this game, poke a hole in the bottom of a plastic cup, then thread a thin string or ribbon through the hole. We set up two rows so the boys could race.
Then, get some squirt guns and fill them up (do this before the party starts.) I found squirt guns at the Dollar Store in packs of three, so they were a great deal.
The boys had a blast racing the cups across the deck. They were supposed to squirt the water into the cups to make them glide across the ribbon, but they sort of cheated and would use the guns to push the cups. It was hilarious to watch and they had the best time.
Other fun
We also had a Minion piñata because, why not? I found it at Michaels 40% off and couldn’t resist it.
The tattoo shop was also a hit. I love having a tattoo station at a party. It gets the kids excited and in the spirit and is super low cost.
The last activity we did was a massive water balloon fight with 400 balloons. Thanks to these balloons, it took 5 minutes to fill the 400 balloons. Yes, they are a bit more expensive than regular water balloons, but that quantity would have taken HOURS to fill, versus a few minutes. Definitely worth it!
One thing to know about these kinds of quick fill balloons is that they don’t last long. (part of it could have been the hot weather.) We filled them up right before the fight. If you fill them up hours, or even a day before, most will pop on their own.
The kids went nuts and had a great time!
It looks like fun so much fun was had by all those little boys!! How will you top this next year??? You are so creative, I’m sure something good will happen…
Jessica- You packed SO MUCH fun into this party. As a mom, I am saving this post to my Party Ideas folder. Why reinvent the wheel, right? You can bet that there will be a nearly identical Minion Party in our own backyard one day very soon. These games are Fantastic, but my favorite part was your Signs! Marvelous! Thank you for sharing your wonderful party, including the preparation hints and tips. I LOVE your blog!
Hi Jessica! I was waiting to see if someone else asked or if you just noticed and fixed it but there is no link to whatever water balloons you used that you were able to fill so fast? It says “these” balloons and I figured that would be a link to them (I love it when you do that!) but there isn’t one. Could you tell me what you used? Thanks!!
Hey! I just found this and I’m planning a Minion party in July for my son and I was looking for water games, so this is perfect! I’m definitely using some of these ideas…the kids will love them. Thanks!!
So glad you found my post. Thanks for your comment!
