If you or someone you know loves fiction, here are a few of my favorite reads from the past year, as well as a few on my stack to read next.
Homegoing: This book traces the generations of family who follow, as their destinies lead them through two continents and three hundred years of history, from slavery through present day. It is stunning. I’ve never read a book quite like it and expect I will recommend it for years to come.
The Forgetting Time: This book follows the story of a single mom whose son claims he lived another life and wants his other mother. I devoured it. SOOOOO fantastic.
The Wonder: Written by the author of Room, Wonder is about a nurse called in to observe a miracle-a young girl said to have survived without food for months. In the book she quickly finds herself fighting to save the child’s life. An imaginative and well-written book.
Small Great Things: Jodi Picoult’s newest release is getting rave reviews and is on my to be read list! From Booklist: “[Picoult] offers a thought-provoking examination of racism in America today, both overt and subtle. Her many readers will find much to discuss in the pages of this topical, moving book.” (starred review)
A Gentleman in Moscow: Already on many best books of the year lists, it’s also on my stack to read! From Amazon: In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.”
News of the World: Another best book of the year, the description says, “a brilliant work of historical fiction that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust.”
