Five Simple Nutrition Tips for Kids
I’m a sponsored Align Influencer, but all opinions about nutrition are my own. Please see below for additional disclosure.
March is National Nutrition Month. As a mom who works in health care, I am constantly reading new studies about health and wellness. I want my kids to live healthy, active lives and that includes teaching them proper nutrition habits.
Five ways we work to teach our kids healthy nutrition habits:
Have a colorful plate: When I menu plan each week, I think about the colors of our foods, since it is recommended to fill half of one’s plate with fruits and vegetables. For instance, we might have grilled chicken, roasted sweet potatoes and steamed broccoli for dinner. Sometimes I’ll even proclaim, “that’s a colorful plate!”
Accessible, easy snacks: I like to have snacks ready-made, so they are accessible and easy for my children to grab and enjoy. I find that if I have fruit washed and cut, carrot sticks, etc., Elias, Adeline and Ezra are more likely to eat healthy. It also helps for times when I am busy and am not able to get them something to eat, they can help themselves.
Take a probiotic: We have started our kids on a daily Align Jr. Probiotic. The tablets include the clinically studied Bifidobacterium 356241, which is a probiotic strain that naturally helps fortify kids’ digestive systems 24/7. § Align is the #1 Doctor and Gastroenterologist recommended probiotic brand‡ and my kids love the cheery smoothie flavor. This is a great help to help with their digestive health. (Get Align coupons here.)
Limit sugary drinks and treats: We limit the amount of sweets that our kids eat and drink and don’t keep soda in the house. We also mostly offer the kids water and milk to drink. Desserts are also a special treat and only given in small portions.
Involve kids in the grocery shopping: While going to the grocery store with kids isn’t always fun, I do find that we have conversations about food choices and how we need to eat foods that nourish our bodies and give us lasting energy.
