4 Tips for Buying School Clothes That Last
Thanks to Kohl’s for sponsoring this post and providing a gift card for school clothes and essentials. All thoughts and cute kids my own.
Living in the south, school starts at the beginning of August. (Did you see their first day of school pictures here?) Elias and Adeline grew so much over the summer I had to replace nearly their entire school wardrobes. I was astonished, particularly by Elias. None of his pants fit – not one pair!
Our school district requires standard attire, so shirts with collars and solid colored pants in khaki, navy and black (no jeans). For their fall back to school clothes, I bought everything from Kohls.com. Though it’s still very warm in Nashville, I know fall’s cooler temperatures will be here soon enough.
Kohl’s has long been a favorite brand of mine. They are a Wisconsin-based company and growing up there meant my family often shopped there. Now, as an adult, I continue to appreciate their wide variety of selection, quality clothes and affordable prices.
For both Adeline and Elias, I chose school clothes from their Chaps clothing line because I trust the brand’s sturdy construction, classic cuts and quality fabrics.
Clothes that stand the test of a school year are so important!
4 tips for buying school clothes that last:
1. Pay attention to the durability of the fabric: Is it going to pill? Are the knees going to wear out? Are they going to wash well? Will you need to iron them? Fabrics that are a cotton blend will wash better than those that are 100% cotton. And avoid anything that you will have to iron or steam. You don’t want to do that every week!
2. Select a variety of colors: Try to buy more than red, white, black and blue shirts. A pop of mustard, purple, bright blue or pink can add variety and make your child’s standard apparel a little less boring. Girls can also add fun accessories like leggings, tights and hair bows for variety. Having a variety also ensures that your child is rotating through their clothes and not choosing the same blue shirt every three days.
3. Buy enough for a week – or two: If you are able to make the investment, having enough clothes to last one – two school weeks will make your laundry life a little less stressful. You’ll never have mornings of, “I don’t have any school pants, mommy!” (Of course, if you have magic laundry skills, skip over this tip!) Also, more clothes means less week to week wears, ensuring clothes will last the school year.
4. Invest in quality: Yes, you can find school shirts for $3, but they will likely not last the school year. Buy spending a little more money on brands like Chaps from Kohl’s, your child’s clothes will still be in great condition in May/June.
This weekend, August 17-20, Kohl’s is having a big friends and family sale. Get 20% your total purchase online, including sale items, with the code SAVER. This is a great way to save on your family’s back to school wardrobe, as well as anything else you need for your own wardrobe or home.
Additionally, through August 20, use the promo code BTS10 to get $10 off a $50 kids’ clothing purchase. (Categories include kid’s clothes, junior’s clothes, young men’s clothes, footwear, juniors’ accessories and character backpacks.)
To save even more money, shop on Kohls.com through a cash back site to get cash back. I spent $400 on school apparel, a set of curtains and new running shoes for Matthew and got $24 cash back. Awesome, right? (Read about getting set up for cash back here – it’s so easy and free!)
I hope this inspires you to check out Kohl’s selection of back to school clothes and think about your clothing investment while shopping. You can buy a wardrobe that will last!
