Meet the Kids of A Wrinkle in Time

This week I have a few more interviews from the A Wrinkle in Time cast and creators. You’ve already met Meg, played by Storm Reid. Today I’m delighted to introduce you to the other kids who are a part of the incredible A Wrinkle in Time cast.

We had the opportunity to meet all the kids at the press junket, including Levi Miller who plays Meg’s friend Calvin, Deric McCabe plays Meg’s brother Charles Wallace and Rowan Blanchard plays Veronica Kelly, who is the bully in Meg’s class. You might be familiar with Levi from the movie Pan, which is a big favorite in our household.

Here are a few of the topics we touched on during our interviews.

Rowan On Bullying and Teen Insecurity

Did you discover anything different about yourself through the making of this movie and playing a role that’s so different than what we know you for?

I’m not sure if I realized anything specifically through Veronica. It definitely made me aware of how the bully is always the person who’s hurting so deeply inside, which is such a stereotypical thing to say but very true. And I think we see that in one scene with Veronica – the layers of her body insecurities and all of these things that are very, very real, that teenage girls sort of access every day. One thing that I definitely learned so much through filming this was Ava let me shadow her as a director. I learned a lot just about kind of what I want to do later in my life through Ava.

Levi on Lessons for Kids Watching the Movie

What are you hoping that kids, girls, boys, take away from your roles?

Levi from mine, for everyone really, I mean especially boys as well, that it’s okay to be sensitive and that especially nowadays like masculinity is so prominent. It’s really important. Especially like boys specifically my age and kinda going into young adulthood.

Deric on Going from Nice to Evil

Charles Wallace’s character starts out as one of the cutest, kindest kids and then has a massive character shift. We asked what it was like for him to have that shift.

What Ava would tell me I had to be the sweetest boy in the universe, and then she’d tell me darkest mind in the world. So I just thought I had to be the darkest mind in the universe and so I had to get my mental mind to be a dark mind.

Deric on Experiencing CGI

Is this your first experience in CGI? How was that experience on set?

I mean it was my first experience but I’m sure Levi did Pan and it was a lot of CGI. But it was my first experience with all the blue screens and green screens and I had no idea that it was gonna be that…

Rowan on Writing a Book for Teens

Rowan is a new author. Her first book, Still Here, released in February. Speaking of books. You just wrote a book. Can you tell us a little bit about that process and when you fit time into right and just what that looked like for you?

It was just really important to me to have these concrete forms of how I view art, which I think is a lot more accessible than how we think of art in a museum or how we think of art as a big painting. I was really inspired by my friends who kept diaries and whose thoughts were so pure and unfiltered. And being a teenager and specifically being a teenage girl or it’s just this point where your thoughts are not as informed with the outside world yet and you’re still processing so much yourself that your writing is more unfiltered.

I had 20 other contributors that helped me kind of compiled this thing that I think is about teenage survival.

It was really fun getting to meet each of these young, talented kids.
