Kids Embroidery: Where to Start + Resources

My daughter has recently picked up embroidery and loves it. If you are looking for a fun craft to teach your son or daughter, embroidery is a wonderful art. It is easy, doesn’t require a lot of supplies and is a wonderful way to slow down.

Embroidery Stitches Kids can Start With

Adeline has focused on just a few stitches

• Backstitch
• Seed stitch
• Running stitch
• Star stitch
• Brick stitch

You can find plenty of YouTube tutorials for each of these stitches. None of them are hard and perfect for beginners.

Online Lessons

Adeline did a beginner embroidery lesson on Bluprint, hosted by Jessica Longe. Jessica was a great teacher and really got Adeline excited about embroidery.

Embroidery Patterns & Kits for Kids

You can either buy simple beginner kits or choose simple patterns to trace on fabric.

If you already have fabric and thread, making your own projects is easy.

For Adeline, we love the book Doodle Stitching and regularly use many of the patterns for Adeline to stitch. That said, any simple line drawing can be traced on fabric for a child to stitch. They could even draw their own pattern and then stitch it. I traced a shark that my son drew and then stitched it with a simple back stitch. I recommend using Pilot Frixion pens, as you can easily use heat from an iron or blow dryer to erase any lines. Of course, a pencil is always an option too!

You can also buy packs of pattern transfers, which you simply iron onto fabric.

Embroidery Supplies needed

To embroider, your child will need

• Fabric
• Hoop 
• Needles
• Embroidery floss (generic is fine for kids getting started, though I prefer using DMC brand personally)
• Transfer pens
