Favorite Family Holiday Traditions

There’s something truly magical about the traditions that shape our holidays. They’re the moments we look forward to all year long—the ones that bring comfort, laughter, and connection. This year, I asked my community to share their favorite family traditions, and the responses were so heartwarming. From cozy nights in to special Christmas Eve rituals, these are the little things that make the season feel extra meaningful. All links are affiliate links.
Decking the Halls Together
For so many families, the holidays officially begin when the decorations come out. Whether it’s putting ornaments on the tree and telling stories about where they came from, cutting out paper snowflakes to hang from the ceiling, or transforming the house into a twinkling winter wonderland, decorating together is a memory in itself. Some families even make their own ornaments—like salt dough keepsakes to give to guests. Or gingerbread houses that double as décor (and snacks!).
Cozy Nights and Christmas Lights
One of my favorite responses was about sipping hot chocolate while driving around to see Christmas lights. It’s such a simple yet magical tradition—and it seems to be a favorite for many of you, too. Some families take it up a notch with a “sleep under the tree” night. Dragging all the mattresses into the living room to enjoy fireside movies, Christmas books and special holiday foods. Others love going ice skating, visiting a live nativity, or even spending Christmas Eve at Pike’s Place Market in Seattle for flowers and treats.
Food, Family, and Festivity
Holiday flavors are part of what makes the season unforgettable. I loved hearing about families who bake cranberry nut bread to share with neighbors and making cookies together (or host full-on cookie decorating parties). Others enjoy chili dinners or big, fancy Christmas Eve meals. One family even does a charcuterie-style feast on Christmas Day for a fun and relaxed twist. And of course, monkey bread and Christmas brunch seem to be beloved staples!
Meaningful FAmily traditions and Memory Makers
Many shared how their traditions reflect the heart of the season. Families who give three gifts to their children—symbolizing the gifts given to Jesus—reminded me how beautiful it is to stay grounded in the reason we celebrate. Others cherish gathering for Christmas Eve services, reading ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’ in new pajamas, or watching ‘It’s a Wonderful Life‘ before bed. Some families even make it playful with Secret Santa exchanges, wrapping paper “identity” games, minute-to-win-it contests, or full-on Christmas Olympics (what a fun way to blend families and make new memories together!).
New Family Traditions, Timeless Joy
What struck me most was how unique yet connected these stories are. Whether your family cuts down a tree every year, kicks off the season with ‘The Family Stone’ on Thanksgiving night, or simply cozies up in matching pajamas on Christmas morning, each tradition tells the story of love, joy, and togetherness. These are the things our kids will remember most—not the presents, but the presence.
What about you? I’d love to hear your favorite family traditions for the holidays in the comments. Let’s celebrate the beauty of these small, meaningful moments that make Christmas truly special.
