Mentoring Mentality
This past Monday I started a four-week course on mentoring at my church, Fellowship Bible. It was amazing. I am so looking forward to the next three weeks. Approximately 70-80 women were in attendance, of all ages and backgrounds. Many people there were looking to be mentored, while some were mentors, and some wore both hats. The teacher of the class is Michelle York. I wanted to highlight a few things she said because I found it all so very interesting and useful!
What is Mentoring?
Mentoring is a state of the heart. Mentoring is also growing to be more like the Lord.
Titus 2:3-5
Titus gives women the command to mentor. It says:
“Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.”
When we pour into others lives, we florify the Lord. This glort of God is the greater why of mentoring!
We want to become women who are busy in our spheres of influence. The “husbands and children” should carry out to all relationships. As one gets older, God’s greatness continues to get richer. When your heart is changed your behavior is changed.
Mentoring in the Bible
In Hebrews 5 it also talks about the importance of being teachers and passing on the truth that you know and have experienced. Michelle went on to say that it is a moral responsibility to give our lives away and pass on our knowledge to the next generation. Mentoring is taking the truth of Christ and pouring it into the hearts of others. Mentoring is more than having a buddy for coffee – it’s the glory of God.
We see mentoring time and again in the bible and it is “life on life.” Time and again we see iron sharpening iron. (Jesus, Paul, Naomi and Ruth)
Jesus means Emmanuel – God with us: When we mentor, we bring God with us because Christ is in us. (I loved this point! What a cool reminder).
Live generously
Giving of your time is a gift. Think about that. What is my priority? How should I be using my time?
There is so much joy in the mentoring relationship.
