Nana Wants New Pics
Here are a few pics of Elias after one of his many baths this weekend… he had a bad diaper rash, but it is better now! I seriously did everything for that little bottom of his over the course of the past four days… two-three baths a day, sensitive wipes/wet washcloths, lots of air, Butt Paste, Little Duck (an organic salve), numerous diaper changes… finally, we ended up putting some Lotrimin on it (by recommendation from our pediatrician) and that worked. Whew! In terms of diaper rash, what has worked for you? (This is going to open more debate than Huggies vs. Pampers, isn’t it?)

Elias is adorable! My daughter had a terrible diaper rash a few weeks after she was born…she actually bled in spots 🙁
We tried SO many diaper creams and nothing helped. Finally one of our doctors recommended “Triple Paste” which is a really thick diaper paste and it did the trick! Whew!

My lil girl hasn’t ever had really bad diaper rash but when she gets one I have used Balmex and Butt Paste. We bought the Butt Paste cause it had a funny name but works okay. Enjoy every second with your lil one, time flies so quickly. I can’t believe our daughter is gonna be a year in October. Sending ya lots of luv, hugz and prayers!

what a beautiful boy he is! we used lotriman occasionally for diaper rash, but our pediatrician and pharmacist had a compound they concocted called ‘mud’ because well it looked like mud and didn’t smell too great either, but boy did it work. not sure what was in it, but it was great.

I used Triple Paste for Maggie’s severe diaper rashes. I liked Original Desitin, too. I found that Palmer’s Cocoa Bottom Butter was nice for in-between rashes. It actually smells good, too.

As for the diaper rash, we’ve had luck with the lotrimin on the red bumpy stuff. Now we seem to have a good system with aquaphor as a barrier for night time or long car trips, triple paste after a poop, and powder all the time. Sounds like you have it all under control already though. 🙂
Hello guys…. Elias is growing soooo fast, and he’s soooo cute and adorable. I just saw your video about the 1 month, and I could not stop laughing…. you guys are just too funny LOl…LOL… Matthew I do see that he looks like you, but I also see jessica a lot in him too…. sorry…. LOL
I agree about the diapers, I have boy and girl and Pampers worked better for both, Huggies always leaked…. good choice. 😉

when my niece Haley gets a diaper rash we put SWEEN CREAM (which can only be purchased at a hospital) on it!….it works like a charm!

Vaseline worked on diaper rashes for us and was the #1 thing our pediatrician recommended. Desitin and other diaper rash creams only made it worse because of all the chemicals in them.
With Vaseline, it locks OUT the urine/feces (which eat away at the skin, thus a rash forms). After a diap change, let his bottom air out (keep a little, dry rag to pat him dry if you’re in a hurry), then apply the Vaseline!
Cornstarch over the Vaseline during REALLY bad rashes also works. The cornstarch counteracts the acids that are causing the rash.
Baking soda baths also work wonders!

i have two girls and when my oldest daughter, sophie struggled w/ diaper rash we used tea tree oil (a few drops mixed with a little olive oil) and that seemed to heal the rash and then we used butt paste as a barrier cream.

So far we’ve avoided diaper rash here. However, we’re using cloth diapers and that significantly reduces cases of diaper rash…
I’m impressed that Elias is smiling after his bath. Cecilia *loves* the bath. She splashes and flops around; however the fun ends when she’s taken out. Its like all her sweet baby dust washed away in the tub…
My oldest son had a constant diaper rash, Lotrimin was by prescription at the time. But recently after I thought bad about I wish I had tried different diapers. At the time 1 brand was much less expensive and they also had many coupons. We didn’t have much money and that was what we had to do. So I’d look at your diapers too.
My pediatrician recommended Calmoseptine. You can buy it over-the-counter at Walmart pharmacy, or any other for that matter. It was THE BEST! I caused my son, Gage, a HORRIBLE diaper rash his first summer (7-8 months old) because I ate too many ears of sweet corn, and I was breast feeding him. It went right through me to him and boy did I feel awful. The Calmoseptine cured the bleeding diaper rash caused by me!
I know nothing about diaper rash, but I do know that sweetie is an understatement.

I think all these creams are just a way to make money. Doing nothing works just as well. I tried all kinds of creams, putting it on part of my children’s rash, and it made no difference to the part that didn’t have cream on it. If you do want to put something on, just use plain vaseline.
What precious pictures of Elias.
One time my son had a terrible rash. We did every old wives tale..even down to using flour! Well come to find out he had a YEAST infection.. YES my SON…(didn’t know that could happen back then)lol So we just had to use the same cream women use but just rub it on him.
This may sound a little funny, but you can use breast milk to get rid of diaper rash. My daughter had diaper rash really bad one time and I tried Butt Paste and all that stuff, and then read about using breast milk, and it cleared it right up. I also let her go without her diaper for a while.
Every baby reacts differently, so who knows what would be best for Elias. When my son was little he always hard really bad diaper rashes, but only when we used Pampers diapers versus huggies. I tried LUVS which were horrible in my opinion for leaks, but he didn't get a rash with those. Only Huggies worked for us. I used A&D Ointment for all three of my kids
For diaper rashes, I use hydocortizone cream and Lotrimen (or Monistat). You can apply them together, or apply one with one diaper change, and then the other with the next diaper change. This was the advice of my pediatrician.
Elias is such a sweet little boy, and I really enjoy reading your blog. I have two little boys (2 & 8 mo.) of my own, and I just have a diaper rash tip for ya! My oldest got a really bad case once and was prescribed a medicated cream from the doc but it really wasn't working, so I was told by a friend to use Gold Bond!!! It doesn't smell the greatest, but it really works!! It's got a cooling and a drying agent in it, so we swear by it!!
I cruised over here from your husband’s blog. My hubby and I are big fans of his books…anyways we found for diaper rash and the terrible drool rash my son always got during teething, that the lanolin nipple cream always worked. It sounds funny, but I had it anyways b/c I was breast feeding and gave it a try. It worked really well…especially during winter. It does leave oil stains on clothes, so be careful is you use it. We would set in on his wipe warmer so that it was nice and warm, and he loved it!
He is SO CUTE! That little nose and those deep, thoughtful eyes…..what a doll!
Now onto the yucky bottom…those breastfed babies may have “less stinky diapers”, but they go so often that their little booties get raw!
I swore by Lansinoh Cream (yes, the nipple cream) and Lansinoh wipes. They are made just for breastfed babies and they really worked for my last two babies. I used the cream every few changes.

How beautiful he is! Diaper rash? Well, I used Seventh Generation chlorine free diapers (I mention it, since you are trying to become a ‘green’ parent) for both of my boys. Better for the environment and better for that cute, precious bottom, too. And there was no leak! Also same brand wipes. For ointment I always used Burt’ s Bees diaper ointment. So gooood! It sticks so well, that you need some ‘scrubbing ‘at bath time to remove it a 100%. Once you have a rash,it clears it fast; and when you start using it on a daily basis, you won’t ever have any rashes on your little one. Once again, it is natural, better for our environment, better for our babies 😉 Good Luck! Bogi
My 9m old has never had a rash – I use A&D at every change. My sister swears by milk of magnesia dabbed on with a cotton ball to clear diaper rash. Haven't had to try it yet…
Diaper rash is awful. When my peanut was a baby, I put her on the floor for tummy time stark naked. I made sure she was on the pads from the hospital to protect the floor just in case. Now that she’s older, if she gets a rash I put her in the bath, then douse her with cornstarch!! she loves it, it’s cool and soft and works wonderfully!
When my little girl has a diaper rash…I soak her in a lukewarm bath and then I use Arbonne’s baby diaper rash cream. I swear by it! Love that stuff and it is botanically based, so I don’t have to worry about all those crazy chemicals companies put in their products to make them “effective”.

baby powder!! that is the ont thing that has worked on my 2 kiddo’s. in a day or 2 it is gone!! oh and also, you probably already know this, but when it is really bad, don’t use wipes on him. i guess it is the alcohol in them but it really burns and makes a very sad/mad baby! i use warm wet papertowels till it is gone and then you have a happy baby again! hope this helps!

Back in the day our daughter would get a bad rash that sometimes was really a “diaper burn”. What I had to do was put her in Pampers (we were using cloth) when we could afford it. This was WAY before Huggies etc. and Pampers seemed prohibitively expensive. So with experimentation we did her laundry separately using Dreft soap only AND I used ALOT of Desitin. Only these things worked for us! Sounds like you got the good advice though from your peds dr.
I love reading your blog but have never posted! So I thought I would post because this past weekend my 19 month old daughter had bad diaper rash. I have always used Balmex and it has 99% of the time worked great! I put it on her really thick and by the next diaper change the rash is gone! I do think it depends on the baby too, but that has always worked for me. Butt Paste did’t work at all! Good Luck!

As far as the butt thing – Aquaphor is the only thing that works for us! Try it – you won’t be dissapointed!
I know others have said it but let me tell you this…Elias had a YEAST INFECTION…NOT a diaper rash. Breast fed babies do not get diaper rash unless you don’t change them enough…which I am sure you do. Boys get yeast infections (ie jock itch…yes…) and lotrimen or monistat is the ONLY thing that will cure it-just as it did for Elias. Yeast is caused by an abundance of yeast…sometimes caused by too many baths or too much moisture or just an imbalance in his system. In the future…once he is eating foods then he may have irritations from food but not until then. OR he may get a virus that causes a rash. Otherwise…if ordinary creams don’t manage it…it is most likely a yeast infection!

Absolutely the best for getting rid of a diaper rash. Just mix a little of the two together and store in an air-tight container. It takes a lot of mixing but just when you think it will never combine well, it turns into just the right consistency. I apply a thick layer, especially at night and the rash is usually almost gone in the morning. I always have some ready just in case.

The advice I received from my GP for diaper rashes:
in the UK you can buy cream from the store that has zinc & castor oil in it – it's the only thing that worked for my son …
also, in the UK, the midwives advise you to only use water & cotton wool until the baby is 6 months old (it's coz their skin is so sensitive).
In South Africa, people let their babies lie in the sun (only for short periods) without a diaper to air the bum & to get vitamin D …
At the end of the day – do whatever works for you 🙂
My little girl had a bad diaper rash for several days. I took her to the doctor to find out it was a yeast infection. That was why nothing was working for me. As soon as I put Lotrimin on it, it cleared up within 24 hours!
The best thing for his little butt is plain ole vaseline…..I put it all over their little bottoms each time I changed them….my babies (now 24 & 20) NEVER had one diaper rash, not even during teething time (which can really break-out their bottoms). I’m an MD considering doing pediatric, anyways a great way is mixing butt cream with any antiacid over the counter chewable pill (like tums) the rash is caused by the acid in his stool so antiacid will neutralize that.
Crush some pills and mixe them up with a butt cream like desitin creamy and walla!!!
My “baby” is 14 but I found anything that had zinc in it (Desitin was it when my baby had diaper rash) would not come off except with soap and water. Everything else came off when he urinated. Air drying helps a lot as well.

I see that you already have a ton of suggestions for diaper rash, but I have to agree with Aquaphor. That stuff worked for my last two babies when nothing else would. Good luck. 🙂
We swear by Aquaphor! It is so great that I even use it on my lips! My dr recommended it for my chapped lips and I told him, I thought is was diaper rash medicine and he said not it is an all over skin protectant. And our dr has made us some cream in his office for my girls and that is always nice too. The baby is a doll!!

We use the store brand anti-fungal cream and it works great w/o the $$.
We too had a baby that had terrible diaper rashes for many months as an infant. We did baths with baking soda in the water. For us, the only thing that helped was getting air to the rash (no diapers for a little while) and using baby vaseline or aquaphor (regular or baby) to create a barrier on the skin. Good luck!

I am a first time poster, and wanted to say, that Elias is ADORABLE!!!
I agree, as an infant Pampers diapers, are the best on boys and there is a difference between Pampers and Huggies Wipes.
For my daughter and son we used Aveeno Diaper Rash Cream. My daughter came home from the hospital with a diaper rash, and we used every sample/bottle we were given (Balmex, Destin, A&D, etc) and none worked. We went to the store to see what was left, bought the Aveeno, and it went away the next diaper change.

It sounds like he had a yeast rash. Poor cutie.
Here’s what worked for us for diaper rashes. You’re going to think I’m off my rocker but… it works just trust me. After you wipe him with a baby wipe, wipe him again with a warm wet washrag with nothing on it, just water.
Then take a little bit of expressed breast milk and cover the area with the rash, and allow to air dry. This shouldn’t take to long. Then lather on whatever cream you choose to use. We use Aquaphor (its the only thing we can use, Desitin makes both my kiddos peel). Frequent changes and if you can allow him to go diaper free for as long as possible after a changing. Making sure he is completely dry before rediapering.

The diaper rash treatment here is a bath followed by a good coating of Benson’s bottom paint. If that doesn’t work we go with the athletes’ foot cream, by dr recommendation.
The NUMBER ONE thing that has always helped my babies with diaper rash(and we’ve had some bad ones) was abandoning diaper wipes completely, even the sensitive ones. This meant washing his bum in the kitchen sink every time he pooped which was kind of a drag, but it really really helped clear up the rash. Also, there are different types of diaper rash; since Lotrimin worked I assume it was a yeast rash. If I can’t tell which type of rash is going on, I just mix a dab of Lotrimin with a dab of original Desitin in the palm of my hand and slather it on.
He is absolutely beautiful! I have been following you & your husband's blogs but have never posted. Please get yourself some Balmex for the diaper rash. Been there, done that with all the prescriptions. This is not a prescription and is hands down the best. My son could not take my milk or any regular formula. He had to use this formula called Nutramagen and it gave him horrendous diaper rash. This worked the very best and quickest. (This was almost 20 years ago but I have seen it in the stores still).

I use Flander’s ointment for all my babies… it is the BEST!! They keep it behind the counter at the pharmacy and it runs about $8. Hope this helps!!

btw. Triple Paste works for us.. its of course the most expensive one, but we keep one in nursery and one in diaper bag and use it at the beginning of any signs.. Both tubes are still practically full! Best of luck.
