I Need a New Iron
The time has come for me to get a new iron. After about 9 years, it is no longer up to par.
I would love your recommendations. I would like to spend $50 or less.
Do you have an iron you love? Has it been a work horse and lasted a long time? Please share. I would like to go buy or order it this weekend.
Grateful for your feedback, as always.
Update:
I ended up going with Black & Decker D2030 Auto-Off Digital Advantage Iron. Despite all the great things said about Rowenta, I read some not so good reviews on several websites about their irons, so they steered me away from that brand. Since I had some Swagbucks stockpiled, I ordered it on Amazon today. The avg. review on Amazon is 4.5 stars and it has more than 1,000 reviews.
Thanks for all the comments!

I'm in Australia but hopefully you find this useful. We used to have this iron http://www.tefal.com.au/All+Products/Linen+Care/Steam+irons/Products/Program+8/Program+8.htm and recently bought this one http://www.consumer.philips.com/c/irons/azur-ionic-ionic-deepsteam-gc4630_02/prd/au/
Basically when searching I compared all the features to make sure we weren't getting a less powerful iron. Features that I loved from the Tefal iron were the stable base, just incase our little one knocks the ironing table (although we no longer store the iron on the ironing table – just in case). I also found that the non-stick base never came off. With previous irons that coating wore off.
Another must for us is an iron that uses normal tap water and a light that tells you when the iron is on and a separate light for when the iron is heating up. Also, auto shut off – priceless!!
Goodluck in your search.
I hate irons.. I have a steamer and its wonderful its your clothes done so quickly. You just have them on the hanger and run the steamer right down your clothes you can get a decent one for $50 at Target, Walmart or Kmart
we have a rowena iron, i believe i bought it at joanns. it is awesome, but i believe it runs about $100 – i wonder if you can use a coupon though?? it's an awesome iron!
My Black & Decker iron has lasted for a long time. It cost around $40 I think, but I've never had any trouble with it and I've had it for several years. I bought it at Wal-Mart since that's the only place to buy things like that in my little town.
I wish I had a suggestion….but I don't. I hate to iron.
I did just want to say that my Mom had an iron that lasted for 23 years…and it was awesome. It was all metal and VERY used every single day. Too bad they don't make 'em like that anymore.
I have this iron- it has lasted about 6 years and is great! I love that the cord is retractable and stores inside the iron. I did a search and the Targets in Nashville has it… Good Luck!

Hi, just ran across your blog yesterday and love it. We have a Rowenta and really like it. It is a little more than $50 but we got it as a wedding gift.

Hi Hon..I have a blk and Decker and love it actually I had one left over from college purchases and mel hated it (different brand and it leaked) tossed it..but the bk and deckers about 10 years old and hot so it goes really quick on dads shirts…and some of the other new features on some irons now are it shuts itself off…Hate that feature! I will unplug when I'm done..(please don't shut it off) I hate when I take a break from the drudge of that job and go back and MY IRON IS OFF!!!!
I would recommend a Rowenta — the steam options are amazing. Also, if you get one of those 20% off coupnos from Bath & Body Works you can get a 50 – 70 dollar iron for a lot less.
I have the Black and Decker Digital Advantage Iron. My husband is a big time fan of consumer reports and checks it before we buy anything. It got very high ratings and we've had it for 4 years and it works great. It is about $40 and you can use a Bath and Body Works 20% off coupon and get a great deal!
Good luck on your iron search!

The best $20 I ever spent. I've had this iron for about 2 years and it really works wonders.
My mom and I have Rowentas. They are fabulous! You would have to shell out a little more than $50, but it's so worth it.
I have 2 irons. I don't know what brand either of them are, so I'm no help there, and well, I do everything possible NOT to iron. It is great to have a husband who gets to wear t shirts to work!
Anyway, 2 features I love are the retractable cord. One of my irons has it and one doesn't. I get so annoyed with the one that doesn't. Also, I like the iron that has a button for a burst of steam. I use that a lot for the very wrinkled stuff. Sorry I'm not more help!
Rowenta hands down. It cost a little more (try QVC or Joannes) but its so worth every penny. My husband wears dress shirts every week. Its the only iron we have owned that doesn't require me using a lot of starch. I love the aotomatic shut off.
Oh my gosh, Jessica, no matter what brand you get, get a retractible cord iron. It's AMAZING. I think I have this one, and I like it a lot (though let's be honest; it doesn't get used much.) http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-Professional-Retractable-Cord/dp/B000ERNCNG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1253889837&sr=8-4
I have a Shark that I got at Target and I love it. Lots of steam and it shuts off by itself if I forget to unplug it.
I love my Rowenta. I used my JoAnne's coupon to buy it. I've had it about 5 years and it still works like it's new. I convinced my Mom to buy one too and she loves hers.
I have a Black and Decker D2030 Auto-Off Digital Advantage Iron. I really like it a lot and it happens to be on Amazon for 44.99 right now, which is about 20.00 off the full price. Good luck in your search! I am fairly new to your blog and I love it, have a blessed day!
my one word will echo what others have said: ROWENTA.
some are more than $50, but you won't buy another for another 9 years or more.
here's one in your price range that also does the steaming that another reader recommended:
http://www.amazon.com/Rowenta-DZ1700-DX1700-Effective-Iron/dp/B000CSBLYE/ref=pd_ts_zbs_k_574106_5?pf_rd_p=298955401&pf_rd_s=right-4&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=574106&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=00Q2ZP3YCZE0HF6MSPFA
1000% I echo the Rowenta recommendations. We have one, and I love to iron so I iron EVERYTHING, and it is the best iron I have ever owned.
Mine was about $100, worth every penny, but it looks like some people have found them for less?
Jess.
I had a Rowenta. Thought it would be the best…afterall it's always on QVC, right ? At first I loved it, then after a few months, it started leaking the water & would be a mess when I ironed. And, I still iron EVERYTHING ! I ended up w/ the exact B&D iron that you posted that you just bought and love it. I even bought the same one for my son. I have not had one problem w/ it. Hope you likes your just as well.
Happy Ironing !
lol I know nothing about irons. I don't iron my clothes. lol Too lazy I guess…
i know exactly when the last time my iron was used… and it wasn't by me. Six years ago in July my brother was here and needed to iron a shirt before going to my friend Kelly's daughter's funeral. I was singing at it and in a hurry to leave when he said he needed to iron his shirt and I had NO IDEA where my iron was. My condo is small, and we still had to search every closet to find it.
And it hasn't been used since. Not kidding… thank God for Downey Wrinkle Releaser 🙂
