Peter Pan Costume-Making Tips
Over the past two weekends I successfully sewed Elias’s Peter Pan costume using a pattern from Make It and Love It. (It took two weekends because I forgot to buy a few supplies the first weekend.)
It is about 98% done, so I thought it would be helpful to share a few specifics to help others who might try to make the same Peter Pan costume.
Elias is 27 months and wears mostly 24 months clothing (2T’s are usually too big on him).
Peter Pan’s Leggings
I determined that I wasn’t going to sew the pants like on Make It and Love It. They just seemed like more trouble than they were worth – especially given that leggings are so popular these days. I found green leggings at Wal-Mart for $3.50 in the toddler clothes area. They are perfect. I bought these before buying my fabric so that I could select the appropriate material.
Peter Pan’s Tunic
I bought green fleece at JoAnns. I went back and forth between green felt and green fleece, but ultimately decided that fleece would be the most comfortable and that Elias wouldn’t be too hot.
My measurements were 25″ across and 19″ tall when folded in half.
I made the neckline t-shaped so that I could add some leather ties to it. I punched the fleece with my crop-a-dile.
Belt and Hat
For the belt and hat, I used brown felt (the kind you find in bolts). My tip here is to buy extra because if you are like me, you will need it!
The first hat I made was too small. I tried using a hat that Elias had as a guide for the size, but forgot to take into account the pointyness of the hat. I would recommend making this hat bigger than you think. Then, after sewing the triangle pieces together, you can always make it narrower (which is what I ended up doing the second time around.)
I am waiting to attach the feather until right before Halloween because Elias will likely destroy it. I plan to hot glue it to the hat. He has had a blast with the extra fathers.
My belt is about 30 inches long. I wish I would have made it 33 inches, but it will do. 🙂
Accessories
For the sword, I used stiffened black and white felt.
Altogether, everything cost me $20. Not bad for a costume – especially one as cute as Peter Pan. 🙂

Are you getting crafty for your child’s Halloween costume?
Thanks for posting the tips. I have a 2 1/2 year old and I’ve already sewn the tunic only to find myself thinking it looks way to short! Wish I had seen your measurements beforehand.
Can you remember what the measurement was for the pieces of felt for the hat? I have a smallish piece of felt so can’t afford to do it again if I get it wrong. Thanks again for your tips!
Sorry, this was three years ago and I have no idea!
