(in) courage: Serving People with Food
At the end of June, I had a sweet baby girl.
In the weeks that followed, people blessed us with lots of food. Dinners, desserts, fresh fruits, salads – our fridge was full of deliciousness.
We were so thankful for every morsel. Each meal gave us more time out of the kitchen and focused on our new family of four.
I was introduced to this beautiful form of serving others when I moved to Nashville as an adult.
A friend was having a baby and another friend sent out a simple email saying, would you like to take a meal to Rachel to help her family during this time of transition?
I quickly said yes. Little did I know this was the genesis of my passion for making meals for others.
For the rest, as well as an opportunity to link a favorite recipe, visit (in)courage.
Yes, Jessica, I do this often too. We coordinate meals through our church if it’s known to others what the family is going through. Otherwise for more private issues, I just take a meal when I know it may help relieve their stress for the day or week. One idea when coordinating meals with a lot of people or for an extended period of time is to use the website http://www.makethemameal.com It allows people to sign up for a date, lets the recipient see who is bringing the meals and sends out email reminders for those taking the meals. Thanks for sharing your ideas! Love it!
I love being able to serve people wit food. I LOVE to cook, and particularly love to cook for other people! I was just introduced to the site the previous poster mentioned – although, just wanted to make a correction, that it’s actually: http://www.takethemameal.com (not make). I haven’t used it yet, but next time I’m coordinating meals to take to someone, I am going to try it out! Between our church and the small Christian school I teach at, we are often coordinating meals for a family who just had a new baby, has an illness or death in the family or whatever! I definitely consider it a ministry to be able to serve people with food, so glad to be able to do what I love to help others! 🙂
Yes, this site is wonderful! I have used it several times.
I’ve often made food for others after surgery or a new baby, but recently, our family was the recipient of wonderful meals while spending days in the ICU at the hospital. When you have a loved one who is critically ill, you don’t want to leave the hospital, and with the hospital cafeteria closing at 2 p.m., there just wasn’t much choice if you were hungry. Some days, we had 20-30 family members in that little room, and I will forever be grateful for those who brought food. One dear lady brought us three meals that week, WITH a newly broken rib!! I have found a new ministry…and will be on the watch for families in that same situation from now on so we can bless them in the same way we were blessed.
