10 Tips for Using Pinterest Well
Pin It
As someone who has been avidly using Pinterest for about 6 months, I can honestly say it has greatly impacted my internet consumption, creativity and blog content (I pay a lot of attention to what you “pinners” are pinning from The Mom Creative – and I thank you!). I know many of you are on Pinterest, but probably a greater amount have only stuck your toe in the Pinterest waters or are thinking, “I don’t need ANOTHER thing online.” This post is for ALL of you. I hope these tips will help you start or improve your Pinterest experience.
1. Create very specific boards
This is very important. When you first get started on Pinterest, you will be tempted to have general boards. Don’t do this. What will happen is that you will start pinning all recipes to recipes and then before you know it you will have 300 recipes – from dips to desserts to crock pot beef stew. Segment as much as possible. Some examples
- Tips and tricks (for posts like this one!)
- One board per type of recipe (meals, crock pot, desserts, breakfast, sides and apps, parties, etc.)
- One board per holiday (Christmas, Valentines, Easter, Halloween, etc.)
- Sewing
- Project Life
- Memory Keeping (general scrapbook pages/scrapbook ideas)
- Printables
- Favorite books/books I want to read
- Inspirational words
- Photo inspiration
2. Create a completed pins board I have pinned about 2,000 items to Pinterest. That is a lot. I have found it very gratifying to create and use a completed pins board. Once I have made a recipe, done a craft project, etc. from Pinterest, I will repin the item to my completed pins board, along with comments about what worked/didn’t work, etc. This is very helpful for me – and for the followers of that board.
3. Follow a lot of people I love following a lot of people on Pinterest because it means I find a lot of great items to pin. Interestingly, Pinterest also adds you as a follower to boards that their algorithm thinks you will like. This helps you to find more great stuff to pin.
4. Learn your URL If you are a blogger, use this formula to search pins from your site: http://pinterest.com/source/URL/ So, for the Mom Creative, my URL is http://pinterest.com/source/themomcreative.com/. This is also a handy way to see what has been pinned from your favorite sites.
5. Pin from your favorite sites If you see something you like on a website pin it! (I have the Pin It tool installed on my toolbar, which makes it really easy to pin from any site. It takes about 5 seconds to install.) Pinterest is only as good as the stuff that is pinned on it, so it needs people to pin new items to it. Plus, pins help drive traffic to your favorite sites. (I’m so thankful every time you pin something from this site.)
6. Pin the specific URL of a post to Pinterest (not the generic site URL) This is an important one! When you see something on a site that you want to pin, be sure to click on the post so that you pin from the actual post – and not the main site URL. Otherwise, once that post moves from the main page, no one will be able to find it. (Similarly don’t pin from a google image search – pin from the site the image came from).
7. Search pins to find new inspiration If you are researching ideas, check out the search function on Pinterest to find new ideas. The search function isn’t as robust as I would like it to be (it isn’t endless, you can’t sort by recent or popular, etc.), but I do always find SOMETHING worth repinning. I especially like using search when I am looking for a recipe, home dec ideas or party inspiration.
8. Write meaningful descriptions (include key words, @+a name will tag someone) Pinterest requires you to write a description of some sort. It is frustrating when a description is something like yum or must try and doesn’t tell the viewer what the picture is of. Be sure your description tells what the pin is. It is also nice when you include the blog name or tag someone. (ie: The Mom Creative’s crock pot beef stew from @JessicaNTurner). You may have noticed that more and more bloggers are including text on their images to make the images “Pinterest friendly” and helpful for viewers on Pinterest.
9. Don’t post an entire blog post in your pin It is poor etiquette to paste an entire post/recipe etc. on a pin. Instead, when you pin an item, write a simple description of the item so people will click to get the full tutorial, recipe, etc.
10. Comment! Pinterest is a social site like Facebook and Twitter, so interact!
Bonus Tip for Bloggers If you are a blogger and are interested in generating revenue through Pinterest, optimizing your boards for SEO, and more – click here to check out this class by Dan Morris. I met Dan at NAMS last month and he is BRILLIANT. When you buy this class, you also get free access to his weekly mastermind site, which has incredible resources on it. Definitely worth the $9!
What would you add to this list? Please feel free to leave your Pinterest name in the comments so I can follow you. AND, if you are not on Pinterest and need an invitation, send me an email and I will happily send you an invite.
Thank you for the tips. I so love Pinterest and am guilty of using general boards that I will have to take time to edit 🙁
I to am guilty, need to also edit. Does anyone know an easy way to do this?
There isn’t an easy way. I am hopeful Pinterest is working on that.
pinterest also has a facebook account where i suggested a way to move multiple pins at once (because i am quite often reorganizing my boards and therefore run into the spam block quite often as well) they reassured me that it is a known inconvenience that they are working on.
Jennifer, I could not find your post on Facebook. Would you please tell me how to move multiple pins at once. Than you for the info.
Vivki, it’s easy. Just repin it to the board you want to move it too, thenfrom the original board, choose “Edit” then click “Delete” and the pin will be deleted from that board.
Thanks for the tips, interesting reading!
Hi Jessica – I’m a lurker from the UK who loves to dib in to your blog from time to time. I’ve been thinking about joining Pintrest for a while, but I seem to spend too much time on the computer already! I do love your informative posts though. I recently read another blogger who had looked into the legal bits about Pintrest and would be interested in your comments on this – http://www.littletinbird.co.uk/2012/03/11/being-cautious/#comments.
thanks for a great blog!
I’m not really concerned – check out this post: http://ddkportraits.com/2012/02/my-date-with-ben-silbermann-following-up-and-drying-my-tears/
I think Pinterest is a young company and these issues will work themselves out. 🙂
Thanks Jessica – that answers quite a few questions Much appreciated 🙂
This is a great list! I think #1 is so important. When I started, I just had one general food board and it was very overwhelming to find something. Now, I have over 25 food boards and I am able to locate recipes quickly. Thanks for sharing.
As the commenter above asked, I am also interested in your feelings about the legal aspects of it.
Thank you Jessica! I am on pinterest and have been for quite a while…I’ve just never really figured out why everyone likes it so much. Your explanations really help. I’m still a little overwhelmed but I think if I go back and read your post a couple of times it will sink in! 🙂
Do you have any tips for pinning from an iPad? I’ve been stuck repinning when using it, and can only originally pin from my desktop.
I know there is a way to install the pinit button to your ipad, but I haven’t taken the time to do it…. I usually pin from my desktop
There is a way to do this! I have it, it’s the same as installing it on an iPhone, you put in a specific bookmark link, and when you’re on the page you want to pin from, hit that bookmark:
if you scroll down this thread several posts, there’s a detailed tutorial for it:
http://www.twopeasinabucket.com/mb.asp?cmd=display&thread_id=3082678
or you can use this site, as well:
http://www.scrapbit.com/2011/06/22/pinning-idevices-pinterest/
Search on Pinterest “ipad pinning” and it will result in a solution. It’s out there!
This is what I did to install the Pin It bookmarklet on my iPad: http://www.jemsweb.com/2011/03/bookmarklets-for-ipad/
Hope it helps you too!
Thanks for sharing!
Great list!! Thanks for compiling! I like several of the ones you wrote…especially one and two!
Suzanne
Good tips, thank you! Of course, I found the article from a pin. And now I’ve spent a good chunk of my morning going through your pins. 🙂 I’m here if you want another person to follow: https://pinterest.com/lvictorian/
I was a step ahead of you on point 2 but definitely a step behind on point 1. I had a spare weekend about two months ago and spent most of it sorting the boards and breaking them down into more specific boards…
680+ pins later I think it’s time to break it down a little further. Thanks for the reminder and for the other great tips 🙂

Pinterest really needs an easier way to move pins to different boards, don’t they? I wish there was a batch tool!
Hi Jessica, Just found you now because I needed some advice about how to use Pinterest. I have also been needing a batch moving tool from the Pinterest guys. I find it very tedious moving stuff around when sorting out boards.
My daughter introduced me to the site a little while ago and even though I didn’t understand what it is all about, the beautiful pictures made me feel so good that I have vowed to not buy a home decor magazine again as long as I have my boards of gorgeous things to look at.
I would love to follow you on here and chat when we can.
Andy
I agree! A batch moving tool would be very useful.
crystal
Great info Jessica~Thanks! I love Pinterest and I get lots of inspiration for machine embroidery projects from it ~ I wish I could pin pictures from my facebook page. Can I use the Pin It Tool to do that? This is where you can find me on Pinterest http://pinterest.com/meauxstuff/
Thanks again for this post!
Nope, Pinterest won’t let you pin from FB. ask me how I know? 🙂
To get around this I created a file on my computer “Pinterest” and Right click on the image “save Image as” and then I am able to add it to Pinterest giving the proper dues in the comment section. Hope this helps.
If you right click on the image you want to pin from Facebook and select open image in a new tab then you can pin the image from the tab. Of course this only works well if you want to keep the image only, wont help much if you want the how to or info that goes with it.

Great tip – thank you!
Thanks for the tips! I’m addicted to pinterest. If you’d like to follow me, I’m http://pinterest.com/kristin1130/.
I was wondering if you’d consider writing up a similar type of post on instagram tips? I’m just starting to get into instagram. I’m confused on how to print them, how to use the app vs the website, how to get them to Paper Coterie’s website, how to tag people, how to set my pics to not publish to facebook every time, etc. I only have one person following me, and I’ve been trying to tell my iPhone friends how neat this app is, except I don’t really understand it all myself! Haha! I follow you and I love your pics.
Great idea! I will put this on my editorial list for April!
Looking forward to it!
crystal
Very good tips! I like the one about pinning the exact post, not the general website or blog. That’s aggravating to click on a pin and not find what you’re expecting. Thanks!
Great tips! I have trouble setting boundaries and have been actively working on that area for a while. Thanks!
Donna
Topsy Turvy Land
I agree Donna. It is very important to keep the source visible and correct.
I tried to cover some of this in this post

I did not know that my blog had it’s on url to see what people were pinning! Way cool. Thanks for the tip! I (heart) pinterest!

Hi Jessica, great tips so thanks for sharing. I originally joined Pinterest because I saw quite a few people coming to my website from Pinterest so thought I would check it out and have been hooked ever since! Pinterest really has helped me simplify many of my projects and much easier to reference for later inpsiration since it is visual.
Voted for you and Good luck! http://pinterest.com/nikipfeiffer
http://pinterest.com/janille_baker/ I’ve been on Pinterest for a little while and love it. I don’t use it all the time but it’s such a great place for my “reminders” instead of having my IE favorites jammed full. I have a few friends who pin so many things every day that I have to unfollow some of their boards so that I can see other people’s pins but other than that, I have no complaints.
As far as the legal issues, this has come up on several photography blogs. I don’t have major concerns myself but I am trying to be more careful about giving credit to the original and being aware of any possible copyright issues. http://my3boybarians.com/2012/01/pinterest-good-or-bad-for-bloggers/
This is great. I wish someone had put this together when I first started pinning. I am closing in on 4000 pins. Yes, 4,000! I have mostly general boards and need to do some editing with them.
Wonderful list. #1 is definitely true…a couple of weeks ago and went through and re-organized my boards and now it is so much easier to find things. Also love your #2 idea with the completed board…will have to add that one! Thanks!
Hi Jessica, Thanks for posting this info! It’s a great set of tips for using pinterest in an organized way 🙂 I have several boards that are likely too general and I’ve been trying to decide if they should be divided up to be more specific…. I’m repinning this post for my followers too – thanks! You can find me here: http://pinterest.com/cinnamonmiles/
I love Pinterest too. You have a great idea with a logo and article. It was fun to see it. I pinned it too.
I LOVE hint #8! I always find it hilarious when someone doesn’t change the description of the pin and it says something specific about the original pinner instead of the person whose board you find it on! Great advice! http://pinterest.com/justbatty/
I know! I have tried to be better at changing descriptions. 🙂
I too have concerns about copyright and Pinterest, so I deleted my pins and am starting over only pinning things I have permission to pin. I made a little “Pinterest Friendly” button for my blog and I hope other bloggers follow suit in some way or another, it would just be nice to know who enjoys having their work pinned. I really think Pinterest is a fabulous site when used properly!
You are so doggone smart. Thanks for all you do and share.
You are too sweet, friend.
good tips! (I feel like sort of a weird stalker b/c I had been following your blog on and off for awhile & then recently found your hubby’s…and then clicked on his “my wife” tab & realized it was you…and it felt invasive to like both of your blogs! hahahaha. Everything makes so much sense now… lol).
Thanks for these great tips! As a newbie to Pinterest this is really helpful. I appreciate it.
Thanks for injecting a bit of common sense. Here I am fretting about my need for subcategories where I could just make different boards! Duh!

I have been avoiding Pinterest because I know i will be addicted and I’m not sure if I’m ready for that! I am however on my way to becoming a teacher and on Pinterest, the crafts are endless i hear! I also know that for my future wedding I will want PLENTY of DIY ideas and I know it’s the go-to place for that. This post just might’ve given me the little shove I needed to get started!
Um, yes, with all of those things going on, Pinterest is where you need to be.

We’d love you to follow us on Pinterest. http://pinterest.com/momstrology/
Thank you for the info on the class. I’m checking it out now.
I would never have thought of #2- great idea! And amen to #9! This drives me nuts! Follow me! Flong1975
I have gone back and separated my boards when I realize that the general topic doesn’t work anymore. It is very easy to edit the boards. I get very frustrated when I am interested in something and then can’t find it when I click on the site that it supposedly came from. Thanks for the top 10 list. Follow me: bweber6163
Great idea on the completed pins board! It will keep me motivated to actually try most of the recipes, instead of just collecting them 😀
Loved this post Jessica! So well written 🙂
A completed pins board? How genius!
I am smithakatti on pinterest, and I would love to follow your boards too…
I loooooooooooove Pinterest! I follow you, but I don’t think you follow me. If you want to I am kduffey13. 🙂

I too wish Pinterest would improve their editing features. I would like to break down some of my boards, especially my home dec one – i.e. put all the kitchen ideas on one board, etc., but having to move each one individually would just take too long! Plus, I don’t want to inundate those who follow me with a huge batch of pins, just b/c i’m organizing! But of course the long I wait to do this, the bigger the task becomes.
Also, I don’t like the fact that Pinterest adds you as a follower to people you didn’t choose to follow. I’d rather choose on my own!
I’ve been on Pinterest for more than 7 months and I love that I was doing something before EVERYONE else was. 🙂 Thanks so much for your tips! I was telling a friend about the “Pin It” button that I have on my laptop but I had no idea how I got it there. 🙂 http://pinterest.com/jenn_mi/
I have been following you on Pinterest. Thank you for this post:) I love using Pinterest for especially recipes and have gotten lazy about pulling up my pinned recipe in the kitchen to cook from (and never actually printing it). But I just realized that there is no guarentee that if I pin from a smaller site (or any really) that they may pull it or it shut down and the link could be gone, right? I would be devestated to loose a few of my favs! You can follow me @:

I’m http://pinterest.com/robintroxell/ and I totally need to get my boards more narrowed down!! and my “completed” board would only have about three pins on it, if I ever made one!
Hi! I’m http://pinterest.com/nanayangel and I want to thank you for this post. I am new to Pinterest, do not have a lot of followers and I am kinda confused. I did upload images on pinterest though. Thank you again. 🙂
Great post, you got a lot of the big hints there!
http://pinterest.com/delaneb/
I just made the time to read this post… pinned it a week or so ago. I’ve only been on Pinterest a few weeks… and am *totally* addicted! (http://pinterest.com/elianastar88/)
I’ve been trying to *avoid* specific boards but have already found that isn’t working for me. I’ve not broken things done nearly as much as I need to, though, and this post has encouraged me to take the time to subdivide some of my boards further, especially food oriented boards.
I don’t *need* a “completed pins” board yet because I’ve not been on Pinterest long enough yet to have completed anything, but I made one anyway. 🙂
I do wish Pinterest would show that you follow people when you only follow *some* of their boards. I don’t *want* to follow everything that interests other people because some things don’t interest me, at all. I’m actually following more people than my stats show, I’m just not following *everything* for most. But I make a point of looking at the boards of people who are following me to see if they’ve added new boards I’m interested in.
I’m just beginning to remember to pin from my favorite sites, but I’m sure finding a lot of new favorite sites from my pins! I’m beginning to use the Search feature more to find boards, and new people to follow, about things I’m interested in.
I try to write a new description, and to add one when someone hasn’t bothered, but sometimes I’m lazy when the description is “good enough.” I do try to remember to delete extra comments a previous pinned added, unless I felt the exact same way. I’m still unclear on the tagging & referencing thing though, but I suspect it’s because I’m too busy pinning to take the time. I often pin and then go back later to take a closer look at the site it came from.
I’m trying to take the time to comment too, but I don’t want to comment if I’ve not actually looked at the link or read the post. I’m doing that later, most of the time, not when I’ve pinned it. Also, I’m not sure I see the point unless I’ve pinned from the site directly… which I sometimes do rather than repin from a pin. I’m thinking that I may try to either pin directly from the site, or repin later directly from the site when I go back to look more closely and delete the original pin… just to make sure that at least my pins are linked directly from the source.
Anyway… thank you so much for this post. It is probably the most useful information about making the most of Pinterest I’ve seen so far! Forgive my chattiness on this, but I’m *really* happy to have good directives about how to make the most of it! It is quickly getting away from me and I’m pleased to have a little direction before I’ve got too many pins to re-sort. I second the need for a “batch repin” feature! Where does one go to make suggestions, I wonder. I’m not pleased with the change they’ve just made to my board views… I really liked the view of the 9 most recent pins to catch when my system somehow double or triple pinned. It is more tedious now to check for that. If my vision were better, or I were on a larger monitor, maybe it wouldn’t be an issue for me.
Again, thank you!
I learned so much! I was happy to know I’m on the right track with a few of your tips but I sure wish I had found these helps about a month ago. My recipes for one need some sorting out! This post was very helpful!
How do I get a recipe from a picture?
You have to click on the picture, which will take you to the recipe online.
love your blog!
thank you!
Loved the idea of Pinterest — I just lost all that I had downloaded to my laptop when it decided to quit working….now at least I can ‘pin’ these things and they will not be lost due to my failure to do proper backups.
Great idea on having more specific boards….
But really hate the ‘timeline’ new look for pinterest….still hate it for FB too…..it is just too much for us 60+ somethings….to have to relearn when a lot of us are just getting into this ‘pinning’ stuff.
Thank you! I had no idea how to find stuff pinned from my blog — now I know and I really appreciate it 😀 Pinterest is one of my favorite time sucks, haha.
http://pinterest.com/meyersmama3/
I dont pin anymore. Hardly anyone “likes”, repins , or comments on my stuff. Others have dozens or hundreds of likes, etc. My stuff is as interesting as theirs. Does everyone see everyone elses pins?
People who follow your boards see your pins. Your pins will also go into the everything feed, so anyone looking at that feed may see your pin. The fun of Pinterest is finding inspiring things for your life. Maybe look at it from that perspective instead?
I’m Keshet Starr:)
This is a great list of things to remember! The toughest one for me is specific boards – my food one is a mess but I dread how long it will take to reorganize all those pins (over 100). Good idea though, really, so I started a new board called breakfast, and pinned something to it. At least I won’t be adding to the clutter this way.
Here’s me, and I’d love for you to follow me! http://pinterest.com/redandhoney/
I feel like I’ve failed your “10 Tips for using Pinterest” because I can’t find you on Pinterst- when I enter the url you have on #4, I get a list of people who have repinned your pins, BUT not your boards, I tried your name, but there are a lot of Jessica Turners on Pinterest,
help?

Score! Thanks for the tips! You also just won yourself another reader!
Great tips! Especially the advice about pinning to the specific page, and not just pinning from Google. I wish there was some way to set up a Pinterest feed inside my Facebook blog page (not my personal page).
I really appreciate this post!
Forgive me if this was already asked/answered (hard to read comments on my phone), but I’m wondering where people stand on “how much pinning per day is too much.” Like so many people, I am new to Pinterest within the past couple of weeks, and I’m still trying to figure out if there’s any etiquette on this. Does anyone else have this worry? Do you care more about quality than quantity in the sense that you’re okay with lots of pins as long as they’re interesting?
http://pinterest.com/jashleyodell/
I don’t have this worry… I find that most people pin/repin in batches. I know some hate when there is a flood of one kind of pin in their feed (like when I pinned a bunch of superhero pins for Elias’s 4th birthday party), but you can always unfollow that board if you don’t want to be inundated with those pins. Lots of pins are what makes pinterest fun!
My personal pet peeve on Pinterest is when a pin is not categorized correctly. I want to look at fitness pins and some ding-dong has put a pin up about a dress they like, or how to make your own soap, or how to get chewing gum out of your hair…
PLEASE categorize correctly people!
Thanks for the tips, Jessica ! As a newcomer to Pinterest I need all help I can get. Pinterest/cherdimi/
I love Pinterest – it has been great for snack ideas for the kids as well as getting my interest in sewing going again!
http://pinterest.com/wilkins/
I completely agree with #6 & #8 those are the 2 things that bug me about pins. I hate finding something that interests me and then only getting the main webpage not the post if it something I really want to know about it I will try to take the time to find it and repin the specific post but sometimes they are so buried it is impossible to find. Thanks for sharing this awesome info. I found you through Inspired to Action!
Jessica,
I am wading in to Pinterest slowly, trying to keep from wasting too much time! I have 2 questions: When is is preferable to repin as opposed to following a pin to the original and pinning it? Also, Can you further explain #6? I don’t get what this means. THANKS SO MUCH!
question 1 – it doesn’t matter.
question 2 – you need to pin the specific post URL (ie: https://www.themomcreative.com/2012/03/10-tips-for-using-pinterest-well.html) not http://www.themomcreative.com.
Great stuff. I use Pinterest personally @ hollyherick.com and now we are trying to implement it for a non-profit I work for part time. It is called Living Opportunities and I work for The studio helping people with developmental disabilities paint, draw and learn @ http://www.livingopps.org/ and the Studio @ http://www.livingopps.org/the_studio. As a creative person, Pinterest is the bomb! P.S. I am now following your blog. From one creative to another—good job!
Great post – I started taking the time to click through someone’s pin to pin the exact post. I was ‘burned’ a couple times when I tried to make something from my Pinterest board only to find that the link didn’t exist. I need to take a couple minutes to break up my ‘main dishes’ into categories one of these days!

Kim,
You have pinned a few things from my Pinterest site and I am following yours. My Pinterest address is Ellisue60. I thought I would read your tips to see if I had missed anything out and except for the Bonus Tip for bloggers am doing practically everything you say. I admit a couple of my mine got a bit lengthy, will not do that again, you are right, if the person is interested they will click on it to see. Talk to you again,

I just noticed I spelled my email address wrongly, how weird is that it is my own name? Sorry.

Great tips. I am new to Pinterest and apparently a slow learning…LOL. I don not have a lot fot ime to spend on it but I love everything about Pinterest and it is so much fun!

Hi Jessica,
Thanx for the the great post! I love your idea about the completed pin board. I wish I could have more time to try the interesting things i find. Inspiration. Yes, Pinterest provides me inspiration and ideas on what to explore about my site Handmad Jewelry News. There is so much out there on everything!
Another option i would like Pinterest to incorporate is for users to have the ability to have Public Boards. I know you can designate others to be able to PIN but it would be great to have a board for the public to PIN on with certain topics.
I am going to explore all the new PINner’s on these comments. Yay! Would love if you checked mine out too. My Pinterest PINS.
Have a great Easter Weekend.

Hi All!
Newbie at Pinterest and still getting the hang of it. How do you thank someone for repining you?
While I like the idea of being able to tell which pins I’ve actually completed, I’d rather just leave them on their original board in their original category instead of having to move or repin to yet another board. I’ve contacted the folks at PInterest to request that they add a little check box that we can use to indicate pins we’ve done. Anyone else who thinks this is a good idea can submit a feature request at http://support.pinterest.com/anonymous_requests/new. They just added the cover photo by popular demand, so it’s clear they listen to our feedback!
Great to know. I would much rather go to one board to find everything I have completed, but to each their own!
Great idea! I want my tried recipe to stay where it is. I always date and comment when I make a recipe but sometimes a check would suffice, especially for a craft. I’m amazed at how many repins where the source doesn’t exist or it’s been removed or spammed. I don’t repin unless I’ve checked it out, read over the recipe, etc, who wants a pin with no directions or incomplete info?
Hi I am new to Pinterest and i found your post helpful but I still don’t get how to Pin the specific URL of a post to Pinterest and not the generic site URL, please if you could explain that point a bit further, will really appreciated!
Thanks!
Click on the post you want to pin. That way, you will get the post URL! Easy Peasy. 🙂
I appreciate your tips. This is very helpful, even though I’m not a blogger. It helps me to organize and I really like the idea of following a lot of people. Thank you!!!
I so agree on so many of your tips! Especially about the descriptive notes! My pet peeve is no description on a recipe or “looks yummy!” well, maybe, but what is it? Lol anyway, thanks!
This is a great list! I find myself dividing up my recipe board every few weeks, and I love the completed pin board!
Thanks for making this list! Have a wonderful day.
http://pinterest.com/rme2011/restoring-the-meaning-of-education/
i thoroughly enjoyed your comments…and seeing your Pinboards. I have been less than creative in naming my boards and have recently begun to get more serious about organizing them and naming them. I love the idea about “Completed” to give a comment of YES or NO or what i changed to make it work better.
My question is…if i pinned something to a board “FOOD” 3 months ago and now have created a board called “Feed Me-Breakfast” and i repin from old board to the new board…and then i delete the old pin off of the (boringly titled) “Food” board…will my new pin be linked to nothing? do i need to go back to the original www. site and link again to it using the new board. (gosh i hope that made sense)
Nope, it will still link to the original post!
I am new to Pinterest so thanks for the wonderful TIPS.

Thanks for the tips! I’m kind of addicted to pinterest but just know I’m using it for my website 🙂

Just found you via Pinterest! I love your idea of a Pins Completed board. I recently started hosting a Pinterest Party on Fridays at my blog to encourage my followers to complete their pinspirations. It’s a gratifying way to use what we see. Happy pinning!
Thank you for the Tips! I have been trying to figure out how to use this site and keep organized with my pins!! These tips are simple and easy to follow!

Thank you so much for the tips…I am relatively new to Pinterest and learning all about the etiquettes..:)

Just getting into Pinterest so appreciated your tips.
Thanks for the wonderful tips. Is there a way to pin pictures from my camera to my boards?
Now that Pinterest has the attention of spammers, I find it very helpful to click through a pin to make sure that the delicious macaroni and 6-cheese casserole is indeed the recipe for that, and not a spam (or worse) site. Would encourage everyone to report pins like this (“report pin” link to the right of the pin) to keep Pinterest fun and clean!
@candysteele
great tip!
I have about 1500 pins all over in my boards . How can I organize them. I am not having good luck on this project
I haven’t use Pinterest because I need it instructions, thank’s for yours! I would like you to have an invitation for me, could you do that for me please? Thanks Jessica, greetings from Guatemala, the country of the eternal Spring!
Thank you so much for the tip on adding a ‘Pin It’ bookmarklet on my iPad! I followed it, and have now used it to pin this page for others to use! =)

I just found your blog today…I try to get back to the original pin before I pin it. This can take some time, as I start finding things I want to pin. I would like to BLOG..but I don’t know how to start..I pinned lots of how to use pinterest pins. I did a craft from my pin. Using tissue boxes to keep grocery bags at hand. We use a lot of these…the original site had pics of fashion and no mention of the craft…I commented on the pin that the site did not show how to do the craft so I wrote out the directions of how I did it…Did I do the right thing? I will be followering you ..do you know what my website is..I do not understand the question..I get to pinterest through..FaceBook..GREAT INFO
Thanks for the great advice!! i am using pintrest for a while now and im loving every bit of it!!
Is it possible to use Pinterest without having anyone follow you? I didn’t do anything to have this happen, yet I see friends following me. I couldn’t find a setting to turn that off. Thanks!
I have not seen this function. Sorry!
Thanks for the great tips! I am still trying to figure out Pinterest works, but it’s starting to all come together.

Hi Jessica Wish I had read your tips earlier. I’ve been on pinterest for a while & built up quite a following but am now seeing all the mistakes I unwittingly made. So wishnI could start all over again, this time following all your advice.
http://pinterest.com/jenniewren 149/
I haven’t read through the comments, so maybe someone else has added this, but I think it’s important that new pinterest users get into the habit of clicking on the pin BEFORE pinning, to reduce spam! So many times scammers use the image from an actual pin but link it to junk. People just see the thumbnail and pin it without checking and it’s soooo frustrating! If everyone would take the 10 seconds to click on the pin to make sure it’s valid (even if they don’t read it then, but just check that everything looks right!) it would make life easier for everyone!
I agree and I make a point of NOT repinning pix from a site that is spam or not valid.
Another reason to check pins – is to ensure they don’t link directly to pornography which happened to me 2 days ago !! I reported it, but Pinterest hasn’t removed the offensive pin yet !!
Very helpful…especially the url for checking pins to a site! Thanks so much for posting!
Thanks for the tips! Very helpful! I am new to pinterest and can use all the advice you have to give.
Thanks for all the tips. I haven’t been pinning long but i really enjoy it. I made the mistake of pinning too many items to one board, and am trying to re-evaluate my boards. It’s addicting!
Yo estoy en Venezuela, y estoy muy contenta con Pintarest, me parece genial el intercambio de ideas de cualquier tipo con gente de lugares lejanos y de culturas distintas, me gusta muchísimo!Que buena idea!
Thank you so much for these incredibly important and helpful suggestions! It will make my Pinterest experience even better!!! You are so clear with your explanations! And like many, I’m hooked to Pinterest as much as chocolate…LOL!
Great list, but I would also include it is bad Etiquette to pin something but forget to link it back to the original blog it came from. I found several times that this hadn’t been included. It makes me “grouchy”when I can’t find the info I’m interested in : (
Great post! Maybe I am just a grouch, but I get annoyed when people repin entire boards. I go to a lot of trouble to make my boards look pleasing so when someone repins them in their entirety, though it’s flattering, it bugs… I’m watching someone right now who has completely repinned one of my boards and is now in the process of repinning another. Is it just me?
I have never really noticed that or would be bothered by that. I would be flattered!
Hi…this has been happening several times to me recently and I’ve reported and blocked the culprits.
If I notice that someone has repinned 20+ from a board I’ll block them as I think it’s unacceptable.
Today I even had someone “cloning” my baords who was not a follower and I don’t follow them, so I don’t know how they can have free access to my boards!!
Anyone can have access to your boards-they don’t have to follow you to repin any of your Pins. The purpose of Pinterest is not only to gain pins but to give them to others too. I very often have people repinnning multiple pins or as one poster so aptly put it “bulk harvest” and I have never had a problem with that. I’ve gotten these pins from others so I don’t feel there are only mine. Frankly I’m flattered when someone cans so many of them at one time. As for blocking someone just for REPINNING I have to ask is that really what you want to do? Wouldn’t you be defeating the whole purpose of Pinterest?
I feel the same way. In fact, I came here looking for “how to pin an entire board”. As an example, I want to remodel my kitchen, and I’m looking for inspiration in Pinterest. And I happened to find a pinner who pinned a lot of really lovely ones… Unless I pin those too, I’ll “lose” them, so I wanted to pin them all. It’s almost funny to block someone for repinning your things! It is a social network, and the images aren’t yours! (It isn’t like a person copying and pasting someone’s blog posts, which I do think it’s wrong…)
I’m with you Teresa. I don’t like to just repin other people’s pins, and I pin my own stuff, which takes time and some thought. I am flattered when someone repins a few, but quite miffed when someone will repin every single one. Even worse is when they have the nerve to name the board the same thing I did (and I try to be original) Now that’s bad etiquette. And by the way, self appointed pinterest etiquette mavens irk me, too. I use my pinterest boards as a scrapbook of images I like, mostly for myself, and I don’t usually include the source and if another pinner doesn’t like it, then don’t I’d say please move on.
I know I’m not the only one that “bulk-harvesting” bothers. Since my earlier comment I’ve been blocking pinners a few times a week – and no…I do NOT enjoy doing it !! But I feel I have no other choice.
In the last week I blocked someone from excessive repinning from one of my boards…and then she tracked me down on Facebook and sent a message which was very defensive of her actions and attacked me for blocking her! So she was promptly blocked on Facebook as well as I do not appreciate being “stalked”.
I’ve also had people repin 50 pins in the space of 10 minutes, while I was away from the computer talking on the phone. And that has happened more than once.
I know some people regard it as their “right” to repin however many they choose, but I think it’s unacceptable and feel violated.
Good info here. I’m sure I’ll have to refer to this list again. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for some great tips. I will make more effort to use proper Pinterest etiquette…now that I know it!
-Jenn
I have been having trouble changing the board in the drop down box and just repinning in general. Is anyone else having this problem? It’s so frustrating!
Thanks, I’m brand new here. I love the visual of Pinterest and being able to communicate in pictures first. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks for the tips! I go for having an eye catching pretty colors board and love the way it looks. I will definitely start to organize especially my recipes as they are all bunched together on one delicious board. I had already planned to start a board of “crafts I tried”. If I ever get around to it LOL! Collecting craft ideas keeps me busy enough for now…..
These are awesome tips, thanks so much! I need to improve on commenting, that’s for sure!
great post. thank you so much for sharing. if you’d like to follow me, i’m: http://pinterest.com/cindy_litwin/
Good tips. I like to click through a pin before I repin it. I have found too many pins not reliable. I don’t always do that though. My pin is http://pinterest.com/angelaroberts/
These are all great tips. I loved pinning however, I tearfully deleted all my boards for fears of violating copyright laws, as I do not have permission to pin images. I’ve researched on this quite a bit & since copyright laws can be perplexing to understand, it just makes sense to not get into legal woes. Any thoughts on this will be appreciated.????
Great tips!

Thank you Jessica for all of this information!! I am addicted to Pinterest and have produced so many ideas from it! I look forward to following you! I am on Facebook and Twitter as well!! But, Pinterest and my blog are my favorites! I need to find out how to get advertisers on my blog…
Many Thanks!

My daughters and I have a “Things I’d like to Have” board. Anytime we need a gift idea, there it is. I did one girl’s Christmas shopping in about 30 minutes since it took me to the exact site. Click and buy. Done. Love me some Pinterest.
Great post! Found it while trying to look for a better way to organize my pin boards. We need that ‘batch’ tool to organize messy pin boards!! Would love if you stopped by mine … It’s under Brielle brenner . Thanks so much.
Hi there, I noticed on my website that quite a bit of traffic was from Pinterest so I had to check it out. I made my own board a little while ago but I wanted to research how to use it to it’s best, I googled it and up came this site. Thank you for the information, my Pinterest board is https://pinterest.com/oilyskinmakeup/foundation-for-oily-or-acne-prone-skin. I’m going to start following you as well!
Thanks again!
Wish I had seen this when I started using pinterest. It wasn’t until I realized I had close to 1000 in recipes and would never be able to find what I was looking for and spent hours resorting that I knew I should have done it this way to begin with!
Does anyone know how to do a search on just your own pins? also I thought using a hashtag# before a description would help to find it, but when searching for that hashtag description, I was disappointed to see none of the pins I took the time to add hashtag labels to came up. Any ideas? BTW: http://pinterest.com/jwilliamsdesign
Use Pinterest to share helpful tips with your followers on how to solve a problem or do something specific. Create the images in PowerPoint, similar to the “sticky notes” with quotes that you see all over Pinterest. I do this to pull followers back to my blog. I have a board called “50 Tips for Free Publicity” (I’m still adding to it).
Each tip leads followers to a blog post where I go into more depth on that topic. You can see it at http://pinterest.com/publicityhound/50-tips-for-free-publicity/
Woh, a wonderful post. Learned a lot from you, dear Jessica. Just opened one new board, ‘Blogmentors’ you being the first pin. Thank you very much.
This was an awesome blog post! I have been meaning to sort mine out but have not got around to it yet. I usually try to see where a pin takes me before I repin it, but sometimes I am just in a hurry. Now when I arrange my boards better I think I will also check each pin. I hate it when I am trying to find something and it just takes me to a Google image site. Reading through the post, I also did not know there was a report button. Guess I better start paying more attention. Thank you for the information.

Thanks Jessica for all the great tips. I was wondering about ‘invitation to pin.’ I have been added to another user’s board enabling me to pin to their board. Could you advise how to set up this option (inviting others to pin) and do you recommend it as a reputable way to connect & build brand awareness? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanx, Kym 🙂

Hey Jessica, I’ve been trying to add some photos from my computer to my pinterest account of art projects I’ve created for kiddos. It always pops up that it’s an invalid photo. Do you know how to upload photos?
Sorry, I never have uploaded images directly to Pinterest.
Hi Erin, if you click add, then upload a pin and search for the picture on your computer you need to make sure it is a jpeg image by adding .jpg at the end of the saved name. Hope this makes sense and helps! You can follow us at http://pinterest.com/tileclick/

Nice tips! I wish I had read them early on, since I ran into the same problem of boards that were too general. and too big, that needed to be split up. I love Pinterest and I was concerned about possibly losing my pins, so I came up with a solution — Pin4Ever saves a backup copy of all your pins and boards to your computer! Please visit our website (pin4ever.com) for more info and a FREE trial!
I really enjoyed the tips you gave. I, too, started pinning a lot of pins into one category, but learned quickly to seperate them. Thanks for the great tips! If you’d like to follow me my pinterest is http://pinterest.com/fairways/
Thanks for the great tips! We love Pinterest at Image3D!
Do you know if there is a way to see everyone who has repined something of yours? For example, I see the first 10 pinners and a “+xx more repins”, but I want to be able to see everyone.
My idea is that if I can see everyone, I can pick one re-pinner at random to win something free from our company.
Thanks!
I have never seen this option.
Thanks for the great tips! =)
I love your Pinterest boards! you can find me at http://pinterest.com/mblisa2/
Thank you! Just found this through Brooke Lloyd’s board (MOB society,) and I am so glad I did. I’ve just recently begun to use Pinterest and it is growing on me daily! 😉
Your tips are great!
Oh–And you can find me on Pinterest (twitter, FB, etc. as “thegrommom.”) Thanks!
Thanks, I am new to Pinterest. I know hardly anything, but love learning new things. Have a happy day! These tips will help me.
Pinterest has come a long way, and I still have friends starting new accounts every day! These are helpful tips, and I have another one to share: backup your pins with Pin4Ever, so you don’t risk losing them to hackers or accidents. A Pin4Ever backup will save a copy of every pin, board, and like to your computer. Go to pin4ever.com today and get a free backup of your whole Pinterest account.
Hi Jessica I love your tips! Can you please tell me how to add 2 images under 1 pin? For example., a “before” & “after” on the same pin. Thanks!
Hi your website is wonderful 🙂 you can follow me on Pinterest @sjdelrossi 🙂
Thank you
I started out with just a few boards but quickly learned I needed to be more specific.
I did not know that I should check a pin out to make sure it went to the right place and not spam.I will start checking.
Thank You very much Learned a lot.

Setting Board Covers: One tip I have is that periodically I go through my boards and choose one pin that I most want to do from that board and set it as the cover. As I complete the pins (and move them to my completed pin board) I select a new pin to do from that board. When I’m not sure what to do next I can just look through my board covers and pick what I want to do that day. I have A LOT of pins and 135 boards. This way I’m doing and not just pinning.
Great tips!!! Thanks so much.
You really did cover a lot of great info, so thank you for sharing! I’ve been pinning for awhile now, but realized the other day that sometimes I’ll find someone who has board after board of great ideas/pins & just to make sure, is there a limit of how many pins you can repin from any one person or board? I don’t think there is any official rule saying you can’t, but as one pinner to another, is that considered rude or flattering? I myself would find it flattering, but I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes! Also, is it common to have more than one pin on different boards? I liked a pin I saw that pertained to DIY and decor and to arts & crafts. I do keep my boards categorized like you suggested, but am not sure if that’s anything you see very often.
Thank you for any help you can provide, and keep up your awesome work here!
Very helpful tips
I get not annoyed, but slightly :-PpP when people re-pin my entire board to their own. Why not just follow mine? Why take it and re-name it? Re-pins are flattering but re-pinning EVERYTHING, not so much. It happens a lot too. Two people come back regularly to, like, top up on my latest pins.
Amy,
I personally pin what like and follow because I cannot remember where or whose board I saw something I wanted. This way I have a way to go back and reference the pins and create from there. But i get your point…Show the Love.
Erin
Uh-Oh looks I got some editing to do.
One thing I find annoying about Pinterest are the people who re-pin over 50% of content of any one of your boards.
One guy who follows one of my boards re-pins 99% of everything I post.
I clicked on his board, and 99% of his board was a replica of mine. I don’t get this at all.
Why would you recreate a duplicate of someone else’s board? Why doesn’t this guy get off his lazy butt and go online and do a search for his own photos of this topic?
And he usually re-pins something just a mere nano second after I post it. It’s not only annoying, but stalkerish and creepy.
I just saw Amy’s post – I totally agree, Amy!! It’s happening to me on 2 or 3 boards I have.
Annoyed at Pinterest: you might want to take another look at what the Pinterest boards are all about. They are about not only pinning the subjects you want to keep track of or scrapbook but re-pinning what other people have pinned. That’s what this site is meant to do. This is a public board and this is what pinning and re-pinning is all about.
If you prefer to keep your boards private that’s okay too. Take a look at your board layout and you’ll see that you can do secret boards that only you can see.
I recently pinned a Recipe that was re-pinned 37 times in 10 minutes. That’s what we do here.
Hi @AnnoyedByPinterest…If you’ve seen my comment (above) you’ll notice that I’m also annoyed by people “cloning” my boards…in fact I feel sickened and violated when they do that !!
What you describe happens to me a couple of times every week – I’ve now put my own limit on what I think is acceptable and wont hesitate to block people if they go over that limit. For non-followers the limit is lower than for followers…but I’ll still block someone who follows a board and then promptly repins a hefty part of it.
This morning when I turned my laptop on I saw someone had repinned more than 50 pins from one board. She was not a follower and she has now been blocked.
I don’t like blocking people at all, but reporting them doesn’t work as it’s not against Pinterest’s rules. So there is not other choice if we’re to prevent these people from repinning in bulk.
Because Pinterest doesn’t have any way we can message other pinners directly (other than leaving comments on pins) we are unable to warn them they have overstepped the boundaries.
hi Jessica. I’m hoping you can me some insight to the problem I am having on Pinterest. I used to get emails that would show me repins or comments or who started following me. Now I do not get notification of anything to my email acct. Why/how did this happen? thanks for any advice. Peg
sorry, I have no idea. I would recommend searching the Pinterest blog or Google.
Peg click on your name in the right upper corner. There will appear a pull down menu. Go to settings and reset the notification settings. This should fix your problem if you have not figured it out on your own already.
Do u know a way to print a 4×6 picture of a pin you have on a board? I want to print out a cute pin I see as a picture and put it in a frame?? Thnx
Thanks for the tips. I do however put an entire recipe or instructions if they are short enough and fit in space allowed because I have discovered times when I’ve wanted to make something and the pin is gone and wish I had written it down. So, find me guilty on that one but I do like the “completed” board. That sounds like a good idea so you’re not just pinning ideas but also have tried them out too.
I would add don’t pin the same pin to ten boards all at once. It floods us followers especially if we are following many of your boards!
Thank you very much Jessica for the Tips. I am very new to all of this: Pinterest, Blogging, Twitter, trying to write an e-book, and starting to use Facebook. There are many things to learn and not enough hours in a day. My Pinterest ID is Pinterest.com/pins2follow. Thanking you in advance for the follow and I will follow you back.
I sincerely hope someone on the Pinterest staff reads these responses so they can take into consideration the things that would make this site even better than it already is. I too have a problem trying to move multiple pins. I have a general vegetable board that I have to separate 40 potato recipes from and I’m going to have to do this one at a time.
I too hate it when someone pins a photo of something delicious and fails to add the recipe portion of the site. I can usually find that exact recipe by googling the title and looking for the exact picture. It’s almost always posted on the Internet so I’m okay there. I then repin it using pinmarklet, another great tool from Pinterest.
No here’s what I would like to see: a way to post my own recipe with a photo so that when clicking on the photo you can get my recipe. How about it Pinterest staff? I have about 4000
interesting pins so follow me if you’d like. http:/www.pinterest.com/gloriak2393
Oops sorry here’s the correct URL

Why do some pin description include pound signs? Like #healthy #breakfast?
Yikes, I’m having a lot of trouble trying to explain what that #means.
I’m thinking it’s a hash tag The kind used when tweeting to indicate the subject that’s being tweeted about. Some people get into the habit of using it to indicate a subject or bookmarking a subject on Pinterest.
# or hash tags are a Twitter means of communication. Seems it is a tool of the young to list categories that might be searched to find that particular pin (or so my kid tells me).
Thanks for the Pinterest tips! My boards are pretty specific. However, I am finding my “meals” pin should be broken down into sandwhiches, caseroles, etc. because I have SO MANY pins in that board.
Thanks for these tips. I’m just getting started and have plans to use this well!
Cassandra
I would add one more thing to your list of Pinterest do’s and don’t: make sure that you have the web address to lik to the source of your pin. I hate it when I can’t go to the original source and get mor information.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I implemented tips as I read through it. I recently started a blog and appreciate so much the help other bloggers offer!
Great tips! Thank you
Great advise! I think I’ll have to create more specific boards on my pinterest http://www.pinterest.com/KireiMakeup
This was very helpful. Thanks
Thank you very useful info
Such helpful tips! As a psychologist/mom of 6/blogger/ soon-to-be-author, I am loving Pinterest for boosting traffic to my site and blog. It’s now my #1 referral source besides Google. So, I’m very grateful for any suggestions to help me become a better Pinterest user. I will definitely be using these suggestions! Gratitude!

Thanks for the tips I’m new to Pinterest and definitely find myself in love with all the inspiration!
Thanks for the tips! These are great ideas, especially #1. Totally guilty of not making specific boards lol.
Another tip (not sure if someone already mentioned this):
For pins that have no urls or bad links, open Google in a separate window and click on ‘images’. Then drag the picture of the pin over to the Google search box and drop it in. Has helped me locate a lot of recipes from “junk” pins! 🙂
About #1. If you ever want to create a new category and move pinned images to it; you can create a New Board and then Click “Edit” for each image and choose the new category. This will move it. Repinning will create a copy of it in the new category.
Mick I can’t thank you enough for posting that. It has saved me a lot of trouble moving cupcakes out of my general desserts board and onto its own board. I used to re-pin then have to go back and delete the item from the previous board. This is so much easier. Thanks again.
Hello Jessica Turner, love your blog page. Going to follow your Pinterest page. I have been trying to figure out how to Alphabetize my boards on my personal home page, but can not find out how in settings or anywhere else. Do you know how to do this?
Thanx for helping.
You can easily rearrange your boards to suit your personal preference by clicking on the little box next to Edit Profile in the top center of the boards page . You can then click and drag your boards to where you want them. You will then have to set the boards. Just a hint to make it easier, on a sheet of paper list all of your boards in alphabetical order to save having to backtrack. Hope this helps.
You can also change how many across you see by clicking on the three horizontal lines to the far right of your screen and adjusting the %. That same icon will allow you to make a print of all your boards. That is how I decided to spell out Merry Christmas with my covers this year.
Hi Jessica,
First … loved this post! I’ve been on Pinterest a while and have “worked thru” most of my questions. The one thing I’ve been wanting to be able to do, but as of yet to figure out how (or if) I can — I want to “search” my own pins. I’ve pinned ALOT on most boards (have become wuite addicted!) … but now when I want to find something I pinned, I have to go thru so many and it takes forever! Any ideas???
Thanks for reading this … and keep on pinning/blogging!
Best,
Diane C.
Good post. Nice one for making to create this information handy! Searching for are you want text books such as this for the way far too long. Now i am just simply content whom i come across yours. Anticipating for your upcoming site.
I wrote an article today, How to Verify Pinterst with Your WordPress or SquareSpace Site Using Meta Tags http://t.co/gfSm7geHVB this will help you with SEO if you have a website or blog a long with a Pinterest account.
Thnks for the article as we are new to Pinterest. Im not sure of our Pinterest name. Its either ‘jai.goulding’ or ‘Jais World’, and we would be honoured if you would follow us too.
Thanks for this like and also read a lot of the other comments. All very helpful and answered some of my questions.
Thanks for these great tips. I’ve noticed so many people coming to our NoMoreCrohns website from Pinterest that I realized we should have a page there! Suggestion #1 is just what I needed to know. Right now I’m having trouble with the Pin-It tool, wondering if I can put one by each of several recipes on a page or only one per page. When I clicked on one I had loaded it gave me the picture of the hands in a heart shape instead of the intended item. Yikes! I also tried moving some of my pins to another board and they did move, but also stayed on the original. When I deleted them from the original board they also disappeared from the new board. Is that normal? I wish Pinterest had a tutorial function! But I’m grateful for people like you who are figuring it out and putting it out there for us. Thank you! I hope to get it sorted out soon!
Nice article..informative!
Nice article..informative! Thank you
Hi – am very new to all this and you explain it super clearly! Have recently created an e-store for my jewellery business in London and am a little bewildered… J
Thanks Jessica for the awesome tips. You know I like the idea on creating specific niche board and that’s really works. Fill the description for each board with related target keywords and that is one of the easy strategy to get index by Pinterest search engine. Thanks Jessica!

Naim
Well thank you for this helpful tips and tricks. Kindly follow me on pinterest.com/titiw 🙂
I’ve learn a few good stuff here. Certainly worth bookmarking for revisiting. I surprise how so much attempt you place to create such a excellent informative site.
Wonderful post. Do you have any information on how comments work? If I comment on a pin and another comments afterward, how will I know?
When anyone comments on one of my pins , or follows a comment that I’ve made on someone else’s pin , I get an email notifying me of that comment from Pinterest. I have actually had running conversations with some other Pinners.
You can sign up in your account to receive email alerts.
Great info – I am trying to maximize my use with Pinterest and your post was most helpful.
Thank you so much for the information. I am new to the blogsphere and trying to increase viewership and subscribers to my website so this is very helpful. I like the “follow me on pinterest” button and will be looking for how to add that to my website as well. Thanks again for the valuable information.

I haven’t read all the above comments, and if I’m duplicating what someone else has said, then I apologise.
My suggestion for adding to your “Useful tips” list is…to please avoid “bulk-harvesting” pins from other pinners.
Several times recently people have been doing that (i.e. almost cloning my boards) and it does detract from the enjoyment of Pinterest knowing I’ve spent happy hours serching for pins and then someone comes along and just copies my boards.
Of course I don’t mind people repinning from my boards (that’s what it’s all about) but I don’t think bulk-harvesting pins is acceptable.
I never had a problem with people repinning my pins whether in multiples or singly. I guess it just isn’t that important to me. I take pins and I give them-isn’t that what Pinterest is all about? Why pin something if you don’t want people to take them? Since Pinterest is a public site and anyone can get in I’m not sure if you can actually block somebody for that reason. As for me, pin away people I’m flattered. I have over 5000 pins and you’re welcome to any or all of them. 🙂
I agree – pinning and having people repin is what Pinterest is all about.
But when someone repins large quantities (i.e. 200 – 300) from one board in the space of about 2 hours, I can only surmise they are “collecting” pins – rather like how some people on Facebook “collect” friends by adding people they don’t even know just so they have more friends.
Several people have done this over the last 3 or 4 weeks, and because the pins were eclectic in subject matter (but all things that appeal to me) I fail to see how anyone else would be liking exactly the same things that I do, and in those quantities.
I’m happy for people to follow and/or repin my pins, but the quantities these people have been repinning seems very excessive.
Blocking someone is easy – no reason is required and none was given.
Thanks for the quick response Teresa. I had no idea people were REPINNING 200 to 300 pins at one time but I was speaking of those who repin 20, 30, maybe 40 pins from me. I mean no disrespect when I ask you this question but I’m asking out of curiosity: why does it matter to you so much? I’m thinking that I couldn’t care less if someone repinned all 5000 of mine.
My quick response to your comment was probably due to the fact I live on the other side of the world – in NZ !! LOL !!
I agree – “reasonable” quantities (20 or so) of repins are acceptable… and to answer your query – to have someone repin 300 pins from one board and then start on another board actually gave me the creeps !!
And this has happened several times lately…and I see from other comments on this blog the same thing has been happening to other people as well.
It’s what I term “bulk-harvesting”…as if they are in a competition or race as to “who can repin the most pins in the shortest possible time”.
Like most people I guess I’m flattered in a way that people like the same pix I like, but most of my pins are ones I’ve “found” from other websites, not just repinned from other pinners, so quite a bit of time and effort has gone into building my collection.
And unlike most pinners I don’t have a blog and I’m not selling anything, so I find it hard to believe that anyone else would have such similar tastes.
Your point is well taken Teresa. I guess I never looked at it the way you do but if you feel this strongly about it then I can understand. It’s kind of like stalking someone isn’t it? I agree that pinning 200 to 300 pins at one time is a little creepy. At any rate I have become addicted to Pinterest and have found so much incredibly good information, wonderful ideas and terrific recipes that I’m willing to sacrifice a few of them. LOL. I love the idea that I can find things on the Internet and share them while keeping them in my own boards.
I would l like to follow you – I promise I will no repin more than three or four pins at one time. LOL. G’day mate.
Thank you for understanding Gloria,- it helps me to feel not quite so weird or odd that I had the creeps – and yes – it IS like they are stalking !!
I find Pinterest a mine of info – and I love sharing ideas, recipes, music etc with people around the world – it’s such a great way to learn !! And I’ll frequently share things to Facebook too.
Gloria, I really don’t think you get it. I bet you are a bulk harvester yourself.
PS to my previous comment…I recently found a pin that I’ve saved and yesterday I repinned it to a board that a follower was harvesting as a warning she was crossing boundaries.
Perhaps coincidentally, she then stopped repinning, but I like to think she got the message !!
The pin is this one: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/457256168388220171/

I have started following some of your boards.
I know, I get an email alert whenever someone repins one of my pins or follows my boards. I took a look at yours too and you have some wonderful things on your boards. I can see why people want to repin so many of them. I am now following you although with over 8000 pins to look at it’s going to take me a long time to go through them.
I seriously have to limit my time on Pinterest and intend to take a closer look at your boards soon to see which I’ll repin !!
I really appreciate this article. I’m still trying to find my way around Pinterest and this is so helpful especially the part about making boards more specific.

It’s going to be finish of mine day, except before end I am reading this impressive paragraph to increase my experience.
I found your blog while trying to search for a way to move lots of pins to a different board, which is ironic because I have the exact board you wrote about: I *did* separate desserts and savory dishes, but there are 238 things pinned to “Treats” and sometimes I just want to make a cookie! I have found that Pinterest helps me a lot while I am doing groceries and decide that I need to make a treat for someone that week so I can access my database of delicious things I want to make and can easily decide by browsing gorgeous photos! (:
I am trying to organize my pins from here on out and have added more boards – I started with “Food” and “Crafts” and now have cookies, cakes, beverages, knitting, crochet, paper crafts, etc! 😀
Hi, I just stumbled upon your post but there are too many comments to read through. Does anyone know an easy way to save a recipe someone has posted on FB to my Pinterest recipe board? When I try to pin it it says you cannot pin from FB. How can I save a recipe if its not on an actual website? Any ideas?
Thx.
LMAO. I’m glad you said it instead of me. I think there’s a glitch in the system somewhere and these posts are coming across as gobbledygook and gibberish. Now when was the last time you heard those terms used?
Spot on with this write-up, I actually feel this amazing
site needs far more attention. I’ll probably be back again to read more, thanks for the information!
I am wondering if there is a good rule of thumb for the number of pins per board. I am trying to stop at 300 to 500 and then start a second board of the same subject. I have run across boards of over 1000 and it just takes too long on my older computer which so many of us have. One was over 100,000, good grief. If I am looking for something special and it was pinned early on, I may never find it in my lifetime. LOL
I now have over 5000 pins on my boards but that’s due in part to the group boards that I have that are Pinned by other people. As far as my own are concerned, you may try doing what I do- every once a while I go through and remove the ones that are no longer important, relevant or that I know I will probably never utilize kind of like cleaning out closets and drawers. I am an avid cook so I collect recipes because they look good at the moment but then I go through my boards and sift out the pins I know I will never make. Sometimes I create a board because the subject is interesting to me and I want to collect information on it. I don’t think there’s any specific number of pins or boards that one can have, it all depends on your own preferences.
I love Pinterest and your post is really great!! I think I am doing most of the things already but I particularly liked the source URL tip!! Thanks to that I found a couple of pins from my blog which I didn’t know about and followed a couple of new people as a result!!!
Great post which I am about to go and share with everyone who might be interested (and that’s a lot of people 😉 )
I think the admin of this website is truly working hard in favor
of his web site, for the reason that here every information is quality based data.
I would like to invite you all to follow me on Pinterest. Please feel free to repin anything you choose or all if you wish. I don’t feel these pins are mine to have and hold since I repinned most of them from you. I find this a great public site and the pins that I have found have done wonders to change the way I live.
I love that we are now able to create a private secret board. I have one that I reserve for recipes that I have found on Pinterest and have made. I want to keep them all in one spot with notes as to how I tweaked them or what I did differently. That’s the only reason the board is secret. I suggest if you want to keep these things for yourself and not share them with anyone then create that secret board. No one else can see your pins. so they will remain in your own possession. Follow me: http://www.pinterest.com/gloriak2393 I have some truly wonderful pins and you’re welcome to any or all of them.
Hello to all, because I am truly eager of reading this
webpage’s post to be updated daily. It carries nice information.
It’s awesome to pay a quick visit this web page and reading the views of all mates regarding this article, while I am also keen of getting know-how.
Hello – I love the information but jsut an FYI – the Chrome “pin it button” no longer works!!!
Hey There. I found your blog using msn. This
is a really well written article. I’ll be sure to bookmark it and come back to read more of your useful info. Thanks for the post. I will definitely return.
Thank you for taking the time to write out these Pinterest tips. I realized while reading them that I’ve already done most of these things. In fact, I cooked my first pinned recipes tonight & just created two boards: one for recipes I love & another for recipes that need tweaking. When I find one that doesn’t work (because I know it’ll happen), I will make a board for recipes not worth trying again. Also, thank you for the tips for bloggers; they will be very helpful once I start to blog again.
What happened to my comment?
Thank you so much for the tips. I am overwhelmed by too much and/or too little on my Pinterest account. Your tips will come in handy. Now just to find time to organize all my boards and pins so don’t drop by just yet until I have done some organizing 🙂
great tips!!, love your blog <3
Great advice thanks. My pinterest board is Kathleen Wingerson
Jennifer, as I use pinterest as a tool for my organizing business I put my organizing boards first, then my personal. I also love the 3 secret boards so I can keep lists of things that are personal to only me. The “completed boards” idea is genius, thanks for the great tips.

Thank you so much for the tips! I have been enjoying Pintrest, but it is nice to find how to use it right.
Alphabetize your boards. It makes it so much easier to find the place you want to display your pin while finding great stuff.
GREAT PINTEREST TIPS! I have been working on my boards and pins recently and am thrilled that I found your tips!!!
I am trying to pin this recipe. It says the image is too small.. How do I change that, so I can pin it?
Cindy,
Open the image in Paint, hen click on Resize, and then you can enter the pixels necessary for the post.
With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any problems
of plagorism or copyright infringement? My blog has a lot of unique content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up
all over the web without my authorization. Do you know any techniques to help prevent
content from being ripped off? I’d definitely appreciate
it.
We use CopyScape on our websites. It prevents the content from being lifted.
Hope it helps. Also, if you use your Google account as authorship it is a way of Copy writing your intellectual property.
I’m curious to know why I’m not seeing any posts
after November 21, 2013. I received posts through email but when I go to reply the post is not on the site.
Gloria, I like your attitude. I agree Pinterest’s whole plan is to pin pin pin. Even the pins I have of my own stuff are fair game. I would never have put them on my boards if I was not willing to let others copy my work. Happy New Year Everyone!!!
I’ve been on Pinterest for quite some time. What I don’t like is no one responds to my questions. For instance I have tried asking if you charge a fee for anything like the new tab button or for just joining up? I think this is important as most of my friends are cautious about this.It seemed to take forever for me to figure out the basics and I am sure I make a lot of mistakes but when I go to the pinterest site I get all confused with your comments. Please answer these questions for me. I do not sell anything nor do I want to. marlene
I have not been charge for anything. Now that Pinterest has allowed commercial interests to join they will not need plain people like us to pay.
Very descriptive article, I likeԁ that bit.
Will therе be а part 2?
Thanks for the Tips. I still can’t figure out how to pin the “Pin it” tab to tool bar 🙁
It depends on what browser you use, but if you follow the link provided in the help section the Pin it button should automatically go to your tool bar at the top of your screen…it doesn’t get pinned there.
Thanks for the tip about creating very specific boards. I have hundreds of recipes under the general “recipe” board. Is there any way I can move these pins into my newly created specific boards? Also, I created. Board and misspelled the name. How can I correct it? I am using an iPad and don’t have the right- click option.
Jayne
Jayne, Go to the board and tap edit. You can then type in the name correctly and then be sure to tap SAVE. To move pins to new boards just tap on the pin then tap PIN TO then scroll to add it to the new board. You can then delete that pin from its original board by tapping on the pencil icon then follow the prompts.
I’m trying to tag my daughter in a comment using my pinterest app on my iPhone but it is not showing up in her notifications. When I tag her, no drop down with my friends list shows up so I just finished the tag and hoped it would work. Should I be able to tag someone using my iPhone?
Also, Thank you for all your time put into these tips, questions and answers!!
When I do a search, pins appear with a “heart” in the right upper corner. What is this? Where does the pin go if I click the “heart”? PS Thanks for all the great info!
When you click on the heart it means you “like” the pin and the previous Pinner will get a notice that you have clicked “like.”
Hey there, I am a fresh website designer in the beginning stages and I’m in need of a portfolio.
How would you like a site design without cost?
Hey There. I found your blog using msn. This is a

I’m also very guilty of very general boards (http://pinterest.com/monib) and I’m now trying to clean them up. This is a daunting task (I have over a thousand pins) but I’m making sure to do it because it drives me crazy so I can only guess what it does to my followers. I try to make it a point to follow a pin to its origin (I hate when I try to pin something and it just takes me from one board to another, over and over) before I pin it so they can get the proper credit and possibly even new followers. I will also like the pin on the board where I found the pin to show the pinner appreciation too. There is a lot of good advice in this post. Thank you for all of your time creating it.
Est-il pߋssible de reprendre ԁeux-trois lignes suг mon blog ?
i would like to know if it is possible to put my board in alphabetical order?? I am OCD and it drives me crazy. I have to say how much I love your idea of a COMPLETED BOARD!!! I am going to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I wanted to know, how to keep from losing my recipe, from my Pinterest board, while I am cooking? The recipe never stay up long enough and I am forever pulling it back up, with messy fingers, to finish.
Is there a way to quickly go to middle or end of a board with a large number of pins?
Is there a quick way to go to the middle or end of a board with many pins?
