Nashville Snow Memories
I moved to Nashville in 2004 as a born and raised Wisconsin-girl. Over the years, Nashville has had a few dustings of snow, maybe a couple inches, but nothing substantial.
That is, until Friday. The snow was supposed to arrive at about noon. Thursday night I stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few things, but figured I could do a more substantial trip Friday. We also planned to get firewood Friday morning.
Well, the snow arrived at about 5:45 am and came down for most of the day. The grocery trip didn’t happen. 🙂 When it was all over, we had 6-7″, the most snow Nashville had received in 13 years.
It was an epic day — and weekend — for my kids, who have seen snow a few times thanks to family in Wisconsin, but never in their lives played in it all day.
Memories I don’t want to ever forget:
The first kid to see it: Elias waking up first on Friday, seeing the snow and jumping up and down. He was so excited to see it coming down and piling up.
The first snowball: Me going outside, making a snowball and going up to Elias’s room and tossing it at him in bed. His squeals of delight were the best. He of course, promptly went outside, got a snowball and threw it at me. It wasn’t packed great though and much of it landed on the floor.
Getting bundled up: We put on so many layers! Adeline wore snow pants for the first time, Elias got to wear new Star Wars light up boots and everyone was just so happy. I busted out my Columbia boots that brought back memories of trekking on campus.
Trying to make a snowman: I was singing “do you want to build a snowman” from Frozen all morning, but it didn’t happen. The early snow was packing snow, but then it became covered with so much powder we couldn’t get a snowman to form.
Sledding: Our neighbors have the perfect driveway for sledding. Steep enough to get some speed, but not too steep for little kids. Elias, Adeline and I went down it dozens of times in the morning, and then again after naps until dark. We did more sledding on Saturday and Sunday.
Staying outside for hours: The kids were literally outside from 9-12, had lunch, napped and then went right back out from 4:15-5:30.
Ezra: Ezra was not sure what to make of it all. We took him out for a bit on Friday and then Saturday bundled him up to ride on the baby sled we have. He just looked around and took it all in. He seemed to really like being pulled in the sled, but would fuss if I stopped pulling it.
Epic naps: Elias and Adeline took epic naps, falling asleep at 1 and staying asleep until I woke them at 4. All that playing wore them out.
Our yard: We have only lived in our home for three years, so it was incredible seeing everything covered in so much snow. It felt a bit like Narnia, with all the trees covered.
The fires: This is the first year that Matthew has built regular fires in our fireplace. The coziness of the living room made the outside appear even more magical.
Today schools are still closed, but the snow began melting yesterday and we are optimistic that they will be open tomorrow. Though we had a BLAST this weekend, after four snow days + the weekend, we are ready to get back to the regular routine. 🙂 (If you need some snow day tips, check out my post on My Southern Health with 10 fun, easy ideas.)
Did you get snow this weekend? How did you make the most of it?
I live in eastern Kentucky, and we received about 15 inches of snow. Everything shuts down for days around here, so there has been plenty of time to curl up reading books, watching movies, and playing games.
Yes, things shut down for days here in Nashville, too — and for much less snow. Glad you are enjoying snuggling in and time together. 🙂
We got 30″ here in Southeast PA, Saturday and Sunday the kid’s were outside most of the day, hubby and I worked on some house projects (inside) and Sunday was clean up day. Not much is shutdown even tho we got blasted, schools are closed today but we homeschool so we still schooled, hubby went to work today and the roads are clear. Glad you enjoyed your snow 🙂
The last time Nashville got any kind of “good” snow was in 2003. I was pregnant with my first baby and working from home with my husband. We, too, decided that we would wait until morning to go to the grocery. Same scenario. We went into Harris Teeter and there wasn’t even a flake. Came out 20 minutes later and it looked like a blizzard had hit. It took us 3 hours to get home – 2 miles away!!!
So glad you got to enjoy it. I miss the “no snow days” here in Texas.
Love Love Love every pic of your day …so excited for the kids ❤️
Lots of fun! I wish we got snow like that in NZ. Do you guys collect/cut your own firewood? Or do you just order in? I bet you go through a ton of it, either way!
