Books I Read: November

Thankfully I started November with our vacation to Malaysia (post coming about the trip next week) because I did a lot of reading then. With my grandmother’s death and my surgery preparation, I didn’t spend a lot of time reading the second half of the month.

November was all about reading books that were on my long-time TBR list. Three of the four I finished were in that category. I’m also in the middle of three books right now, so between those + my time at home recovering from surgery, I think I will meet my goal of reading 50 books by the end of the year, which I am very excited about!

Here’s what I read this month:

The Secret Keeper: This book by Kate Morton had been on my TBR list for a very long time and our trip to Malaysia felt like the perfect long week to read the long book. I’ve had many people tell me it is Kate Morton’s best book and it lived up to the hype. The book takes readers along for a discovery of deception when Laurel, a movie actress goes on a hunt to find out more about her dying mother’s past. Her research uncovers people she never knew and a life she couldn’t have imagined. A fantastic story with an unexpected twist, The Secret Keeper is everything that makes fiction great.

Homegoing: This book will be on my best of 2016 reads FOR SURE. I can’t stop telling people about this book. It starts with the story of two half-sisters, separated by forces beyond their control: one sold into slavery, the other married to a British slaver. The book then follows the sisters’ lineage, with generations of children’s stories. Every chapter is another generation, which I thought could never work, but it does and is powerful, heartbreaking and unforgettable. A must-read book.

The One in a Million Boy: This book was another with a lot of hype. I had it on my kindle and read it while in Malaysia. It is a touching read about the friendship between a young boy scout and the 107-year-old woman that he helps each week. When he unexpectedly passes away, his father takes over the volunteering and learns a lot about himself and his son.

Eleanor and Park: This YA book is about two misfits who fall in love. It was an easy read (I read it on my kindle) and brought back fond memories of my first boyfriend. The writing is honest and vulnerable. I loved this book.
