Writing & Self-Care: Why I’ve Been Quiet
If you are a regular reader here, you have probably noticed that I have been VERY quiet this past month, only writing half a dozen posts in the past 30 days.
The reason for this is I am on book deadline. I haven’t shared much about the book publicly yet, but I will soon enough. Between my full-time job and the book deadline (it’s due October 15), I have been working close to 60 hours a week. Any extra time has been spent at home with my family and being sure to take care of myself so I don’t get too burned out or sick.
Earlier this month I attended a writers retreat/girls trip with my (in)courage writer friends to Cancun, and it turned out to be the perfect break in the midst of a heavy working summer. I worked on my book every day I was there (I wrote for 3 hours every morning, getting up at 4:30 or 5 am each day), but also had plenty of down time to connect with friends and read. I read 4 books in 5 days! I’ll be writing more about the resort soon (it was my first trip to Cancun), and my time there.
Actually, I have SO many posts in draft for you, and I will get to a more regular posting schedule soon. Many just need a few photos or links and they will be ready. I recognized that I was letting y’all down by my sporadic content and I’ve hired a friend to help me get things back on track (don’t worry, I’ll still be doing the writing!)
Thank you for grace during this busy season. I have been thinking about each of you every day as I write, praying that my words will minister in personal and practical ways. I am so excited what the next year will bring.
No worries, your posts are always so on target, so I don’t mind if you have a few less sometimes! Your plans sound wonderful and I can’t wait to learn more about your new book!
I agree! Well said. ❤️
So excited for the next book! And glad you took some time for self-care with friends!
So glad to hear it – I was a little worried, but very excited to hear about a new book. I’m late to the Fringe Hours party, but I’m practically obsessed right now with your thoughts on mom life and self-care. You’ve inspired me to take charge of my own time and keep being creative even though I’m a mom now.
I recently heard a coworker talking about ALL of the things and hobbies she had before her child was born (4 years ago) and she’s basically resigned herself to not pick up any of those hobbies until he’s a teenager. I’m thankful for the message you share!
Greetings from the UK. Love what you share and for the way you communicate how you make your lovely and extremely productive life work. I am currently re-reading Fringe Hours, which I loved, and I have been encouraged by you and others to get into reading similarly brilliant books by Crystal Paine and Laura Vanderkam. A new School term looms, and as ever, I am keen to make and keep good habits. Also so excited to hear more about your new book. Take care.
Waving across the pond! Glad you have found some good resources for you. 🙂
The time you are taking is an inspiration. I am trying not to be overcome by jealousy.
I am SO looking forward to your new book. I feel supported by you and dont even know you so please know that i am cheering you on from the sidelines. GO! MOM! GO!!
What a thoughtful thing to say. Honored my words have supported in some small way.
By conserving precious time & mental energy to focus on BIG priorities, you’re modeling the self-care that’s inspiration for all of us! 🙂 The writing retreat sounds just wonderful too. Kudos to you Jessica!
Thank you for your kind words!
