6 Ways to Save Money on Halloween Costumes
Halloween is next month, which means now is the time to figure out costumes and shop. By beginning now, you will save money, have less stress and be prepared for any unexpected early deals on Halloween costumes.
Here are six ways to save money on Halloween costumes:
Shop Early
By shopping now, you can often find better deals. If you decide to buy used, you will also have a better chance of finding the costume that you are looking for at a great price (because someone else didn’t snatch it up already). Our family did Super Mario Bros. a few years ago, and I was able to find Elias’s and Ezra’s costumes on ebay for cheaper than Amazon! Both costumes were new in the packaging too. I know this wouldn’t have been the case if I was shopping in October.
Shop Around
I love Amazon as much as the next person, but it is not always the most affordable option when it comes to costumes. Shop around for your costume (or costume materials if you are making it) to find it at the best price. If you enter a costume into Google, it will show you where you can buy it and you can easily compare prices. Zulily won’t show up on Google, but it often has great deals on costumes too, so it is worth subscribing to their emails.
Maximize coupons and credits for new customers
This is a big one! Many sites offer credits when you shop on their site for the first time. Here are a few that I recommend checking out (for Halloween costumes or just for other household goods).
Jet.com: This site is very much like Amazon, with a HUGE selection of products. When I joined they were offering $10 off your first three purchases, which basically meant the Princess Peach accessory set I needed for Adeline was FREE. Sign up here and click promos to see the current offers they have available.
Hollar.com: This site is new to me this year, and I LOVE it. It is a discount retailer that has everything from home decor and paper products to pasta and body products at crazy low prices. You get a $2 credit when you join using my referral link. They have a large selection of Halloween items, but everything on Hollar is limited supply, so shop now.
You can also use Ebates to shop your favorite online retailer and get cash back for every purchase. I always do my online shopping through Ebates. It’s like free money. Get $10 when you make your first purchase using my referral link.
Borrow Costumes
Kids grow fast, so a great way to save money is to borrow the costume from someone else. Post on Facebook and ask if any friends have the costume you are looking for. I was shocked by how many friends have done Super Mario Bros. after I posted that it was what we were doing this year.
Make Your Own
For many costumes, making your own can be more cost effective than buying it, especially if you get creative with things you have like solid colored sweats and products you have at home. A few super affordable costumes I have made in the past include:
- Candy Corn Costume
- Gnome Costume
- No-Sew Owl Costume
- Star-Bellied Sneetch
- Baby Wonder Woman Costume
- Family Red Riding Hood Costumes
- Fancy Nancy Costume
- Sam I Am from Green Eggs and Ham
- Captain Underpants Costume
- Alice in Wonderland Card Costume
- Alice in Wonderland Tweedledee and Tweedledum Costumes
- Alice in Wonderland Caterpillar Costume
Use What You Have
If you have a large dress up collection, dig into your stash to find a costume to wear. My friend Colleen has three girls who always want to be princesses, so she cheerfully shared with me that they won’t have to do any shopping beyond their own dress up box.
