September & October Reads

Big news friends. I submitted my book manuscript this week. I know things have been sporadic on the blog, but I have been writing more than ever (just not here!). Because of all the writing, I was doing less of everything else, including reading, which is why I skipped my reads post in September. That said, in the past two months, I still managed to finish seven books and they all were 4-5 stars. SO many good reads. Get your TBR list ready.

The Girl Who Knew Too Much (library book): Set in 1930s Hollywood, this delightful mystery is a quick read with a GREAT twist at the end. Fans of titles like Loving Frank and The Paris Wife will enjoy this book.

The Glass Castle (library book): This is an older book that I had never read. With it’s movie release, everyone was buzzing about it and I decided it was time to see what all the fuss was about. A memoir about growing up in astonishing poverty, I devoured this story. Unforgettable.

Lilli de Jong (library book): THIS BOOK. OMG. Wow, wow, wow. I picked it up on a whim at the library and absolutely loved it. Can’t stop talking about it. Seriously, historical fiction readers will adore this book about a Quaker woman who gets pregnant outside of marriage and decides to keep her baby (unheard of in the time). Her fight for her daughter against injustice, poverty and society’s social norms will captivate readers.

With Love from the Inside (audio book): I’m not sure what prompted me to buy this audio book (I think a sale), but the story of a mother on death row and her adult daughter, and the way their lives part and come back together caused me to weep by the end. The audio book was performed by two actors and was really well done.

The Alice Network (library book): This book has all the elements of my favorite type of World War II novel, set in two different periods, great story, building upon two people’s lives intersecting along with a few unexpected twists.

Castle of Water (personal library): I bought this book after I kept seeing it raved about on Instagram and Facebook. After finishing it I am wondering why everyone is not talking about and reading this book. It is PHENOMENAL. Set in the South Pacific after a place crash, the story of two unlikely characters fighting for survival left me breathless. I don’t want to give anything away, but trust me. You need to read this book. Stat.

Sourdough (Book of the Month): This is not my normal book, but after seeing a lot of good reviews, I decided to pick it up. I needed something light and easy while I was finishing my manuscript and this was perfect. Quirky and fun, expect to want to eat ALL THE BREAD while reading this book.
