Egypt in Nashville

Saturday we went to the Frist Art Museum to see this huge exhibit of artifacts from Egypt. It was incredible. Here is what the Frist web site says about the exhibit:

“The Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt features the largest selection of antiquities ever loaned by Egypt for exhibition in North America. The exhibition includes over 107 magnificent works, ranging from monumental stone sculptures of Egyptian royalty and deities to such luxurious tomb furnishings as gold jewelry, ornate coffins, a model of the river ship of the pharaoh Amenhotep II, and a sarcophagus painted with scenes of the afterlife. Also on view will be a full-scale reconstruction of the tomb of Thutmose III, as well as an educational exhibition on the ancient practice of mummification, which will include both human and animal mummies.”

The Frist gives tourgoers earphones and walkmans to listen to soundbites about many of the artifacts – much of which is narrated by Jeremy Irons. His deep voice was perfect, except when he was talking about a lion – then all I could think about was Scar.

The twins weren’t so into the mummies and Dave didn’t get to enjoy as much of the tour, but he didn’t seem to mind too much. After the Egypt tour, we went upstairs in the museum to see an exhibit of Pulitizer Prize winning photos since the 30. It was incredibly moving… we loved it.
