Outdoor Photo Shoot Lessons: Bubbles are Magical
I love a good outdoor photo shoot! Our amazingly talented friend, Lee Steffen, agreed to take Elias’s one year portraits. We were supposed to do them a few weeks ago, but rain caused us to postpone the outdoor photo shoot. We did the shoot this past Sunday and I am dying to see the shots Lee got (the above is one a couple previews he sent to just get me more excited). We did the shoot at this great park near our house and had lots of fun set-ups. Of course, it was 90 degrees outside and humid, which was not ideal, but Elias handled it well! He is such a good baby.
Here are the lessons I learned/was reminded of:
- Doing an outdoor photo shoot in the summer will result in a sweaty baby. Bring a towel to attempt to towel dry his hair, though it still won’t look right.
- Cold, wet washcloths are a GREAT idea. Bring about 5, not 2, for they will get grimey fast.
- Shoot as late as possible. We started shooting around 5, but I think we should have started at 6. It would have been a little cooler (though not much) and there still would have been enough light.
- Bring extra balloons. I brought a bunch of 5 balloons for Elias to hold, but then we decided to let him let them go one at a time – I wish we would have had a few extras.
- Bubbles are magical (see above picture).
- Remember that you only need about 5 good shots – and you will get them. 🙂
- Bring music. Matthew played music for Elias on his iphone and it was a great mood booster and distraction.
- Bring a video camera. Matthew shot a little video of the shoot and I love it.
- Have fun! Your child only turns one once. 🙂
Update: you can see the photos Lee took here.

Ha,ha, I love the picture Jessica! We did a photo shoot 2 weeks ago for our son, and let me tell you we were dripping sweat bc it was so Hot outside. We thought about waiting until Fall to shoot some better ones. I can't wait to see the rest of his photos! 🙂
Elias is just to cute! Can't wait to see more.
That shot is amazing! But it is probably easier because he had such a great subject in front of the camera. 😉 I'm sure you hear it all the time, but he is just too adorable!!
Thanks so much for the tips Jessica. My baby turns 1 on Saturday. I LOVE the bubbles idea and I was planning on getting some balloons too! I can't wait to see more pics from Elias' shoot!
Thanks for sharing these great tips!!
Too cute! Great tips too, Jessica.
I love that Elias is an iphone baby too – our Andon loves playing with mine! We crank on You Tube with any baby animals video and he's a happy camper!
