Halloween DIY: Easy Cheesecloth Ghost Tutorial
When I was a little girl, my mom loved to craft with my sister and me, especially around Halloween. My mom has always loved Halloween (I think it has something to do with her birthday being in October) and each year we would do a lot of Halloween crafts. This cheesecloth ghost project was one of my favorites, and today I am excited to share it with you.
Elias, Adeline and I made the ghosts this weekend, while Matthew was away on business. It was the perfect rainy Sunday project (so please forgive the indoor, less than perfect light in the photos). The kids wore their Halloween shirts (because why not?) and we had a blast. The project is a bit messy, but easy for young kids and chances are, you have the supplies at home!
Easy Cheesecloth Ghost Tutorial
Supplies
- Cheesecloth (found at any grocery or craft store)
- Elmer’s glue
- Black felt
- Scissors
You will also need something to make the ghost’s body. A balloon + tin can work well. I also recommend spreading garbage bags on your table to make things easier to clean up.
Directions
Pour Elmer’s glue in a large bowl or container, then dilute the glue by 50 percent with water. The kids loved this part!
Dip the cheesecloth in the bowl and saturate it with the glue/water mixture.
Pull it out of the bowl and form your ghost. You will want to stretch out the cheesecloth so that it doesn’t adhere to the can.
Let it dry overnight. When the cheesecloth is dry, pop the balloon with something sharp, then gently peel it off the cheesecloth. The head may sink in when you do this, but after removing the balloon you can easily reshape it.
Cut out your eyes and mouth with black felt and glue to the ghost. (You can also use googly eyes.)
The finished product is just darling and has a very nostalgic, yet whimsical feel. Matthew kept saying, “those are so cool.”
I must say, I agree! Hope you try them out with your kids.

Super fun! I’m not into complicated crafts with my kids, so this is just up our alley. We’ll probably try this soon. Thanks!
SO cute! Going to try this with my kiddos! Thank you, friend! 😉
Love this craft idea – thank you for sharing!!
Just curious if this “Pour Elmer’s glue in a large bowl or container, then dilute the glue by 50 percent with water.”
Means Eg 1 cup glue to 1 cup water?? Or 1/2 cup water??
